My Aunts PC is a reasonable spec - 512RAM P4-2ghz, decent sized hard drive, naff integrated graphics.
Its several years old now and seems to be inordinately slow to boot/shut down/do anything. I have tried the following:

Remove any unused programs
Defrag hard drive
Run CCleaner

but am now at a loss to suggest anything else, its still rubbish. Are there any better cleaning apps I could use? I'm assuming its an accumulated software issue as i would have thought the hardware is more than capable of simple office tasks and internet use? She uses AVG.

Any ideas/tips?

Would another 512meg of ram and a win XP rebuild speed it up or would that compound the problem?

More ram would help and a clean install of XP would too . I may have some ram that would help you out if you know what sort you have .
