Operating Systems and Languages

I am in the process of buying a Dell laptop but before I can purchase it I
need to make a decision as to what OS to buy for my needs. I am in US but
this is going to be a gift for a French speaking individual. So I will need
to make sure that OS has the french language capability. I can upgrade to the
Vista Ultimate edition if it will give me an option of adding french or also
wanted to find out if XP would be an easier way to go (adding another
language). Could you help me decide? Thank you!

Go with Vista Ultimate since it supports all World Wide languages, you don't
get that with the other editions. All shipping computers fully support
Windows Vista, so might as well you go with it unless there are some
specific applications you are not sure will work right on Vista yet.

For XP, Multilingual User Interface (MUI) is not a retail product, but was
available only under a volume license agreement. Go with Vista Ultimate -
language packs are free.

Bear in mind that French use AZERTY keyboards - it is a real pain typing
French on a QWERTY keyboard as French characters - eg é, ç, è, ê etc - are
not so accessible.

Why not order the laptop from dell.fr, then you will get one with French OS
and an AZWERTY keyboard

Same laptop in France will cost at least twice as much if not more and i
think the keyboard issue could be taken care of by addiding stickers to keys
and adding a french language to the keyboard.
