Thanks for sending this.

There still isn't a good tool to backup Opera. It's a real mess. I hope
they fix this one day.

what sort of backup are you looking for
I've successfully copied the Opera folder to numerous locations - a form of
backup, and it launches happily from these - I also have a copy on a flash
drive running as a portable version

synchback backs up Opera nicely too

Tell us more. <g>

Backup" ?\Opera\Profile" that is all you need to backup.

When you install a new Opera version, before you start Opera copy your
old ?\Opera\Profile to the new version, then when you open Opera all
your original settings will be there.

Another post offered a link I'd never seen that tells you what files to back
up. Are you saying that the Profile directory contains everything -- mail
included?

It's the usual story; - I like Opera a lot, but when I look foe an answer

to the ng's are completely ignored.

(At least they don't flame me like a linux group would)

I'm not sure about mail because I never use it and have no reason to
back it up.

I sent a note to Opera asking this very question. Here's the catch:
Opera, by default, sends everything to \program files\Opera\Profile. But
you can change this. I, of course, nearly always choose to leave things
as they are <grin>. So yes, copying the Profile directory will back up
everything. Very nice!

For Opera users, clicking on "Help" and then "About Opera" gives you all
the file paths for all of your data.

Everything is in the profile directory, including keyboard, mouse,
menu, toolbar, searches and skin setups, ad filtering, notes, mail,
wand passwords, bookmarks, contacts, news feeds, usenet and irc stuff,
cookies, history, favicons, user javascript and so on.

The only thing you might want to backup outside profile is the stuff
you eventually have outside that directory (some side panels, opsed,
mhtsaver and stuff like that, which in my case is under /Tools under
the main directory). I usually rar the entire opera directory and
uncompress it after formatting. Opera doesn't use registry entries, so
the files are the only thing you might want to backup.

The url you talk about is at
http://www.opera.com/support/search/supsearch.dml?index=313

An addendum to my previous post. My mail is in a separate directory. I
don't know why. I've added that path to my backup.

What about C:\PROGRAM FILES\OPERA\mail
and C:\Program Files\Opera\Program\Plugins

which I find listed in my Opera's Help>About ?

Yup, I discovered that later. I read to quickly. I don't have any
plugins, but I've added \mail to my backup program's path.

I get lots of help at the Opera forums site, available from within Opera
by alt-spacebar (at least on my system). Lots of good people there.

I don't use Opera mail but I just setup a mail account to see what
folders are created using Opera Ver 8.51, a new folder "Sent" was
created.

Perhaps next time you send an email check "Sent" and also "Trash" and
see if you can view a copy of the email you just sent.

I had a look just now and saw two of your posts that didn't receive a
reply.

They don't seem to like mail questions being asked in the newsgroup
opera.general but mail questions asked in opera.mail+news usually
receive a reply.

LOL, that's a good thing then isn't it. :)

Most programs I don't allow to install in c:\program files so I
override Opera on this too.

When Opera release a new version, after I install it and before
running it. I create the folder "Profile" and add "opera6.adr" to the
folder which gives me all my saved Bookmarks from the word go.
The rest of my old settings I don't restore because I'm happy enough
setting up a new version of Opera from scratch.

Oh,dear, somewhere in the knowledgebase - I can't find it right now, I
thought it said both sent and received are sored in the monthly mbs; I
assumed that my "sent" folder is a hangover from my previous version,
specially as it doesn't get updated.>

I *can* see my sent mail, I just want to be sure I can back it up.

They might have told me - I found mail+news by accident!(I know it's OT, but I wondered if the group didn't mind you might be able
to confirm sent mail _is_ in the monthly allpurpose mailbox)

I don't know what you mean by "monthly allpurpose mailbox" but reading
on-line "How do I back up my Opera files?"
http://www.opera.com/support/search/supsearch.dml?index=313 they
suggest to backup the whole Mail directory, which is sure to include
all of your mailboxes.
