I am going to assume by your question that you are new
not only to Front Page 2003 but any version of Front Page.

In simple terms, there are two types of webs: a disk
based web that resides on your PC and a server based web
that is "on the web".

The disk based web is the web you work on while you are
developing (ie, making changes to your site). You create
and modify your web using Front Page. You can also view
and navigate the site using Front Page's Preview mode OR
check to see how it will look in a browser. You will not
be able to test features that require the Front Page
Extensions in order to function. Their are a number of
functions which require the Extensions of which form
processing (the ability for visitors to fill out a form
on-line and submit it) is an example. You do not have to
be "on the web" to do this.

The server based web is created when you File Publish
your web to your web service provider's system. The
publishing process copies all of the required files from
your Front Page disk based web to the web service
provider. Once this process has been completed, your site
is "on the web". You must be connected to the web through
your internet service provider to perform the publish.

You could open your server based web and make your
changes to the "live" web but, in general, this is not
recommended.

I hope this helps.

Thank you for your quick reply. I have no problem editing
my website live but when I am not on the web I can not
open the disk based site. I click on the start, programs,
and then Front Page. After that Front Page will open but
the site does not come up. The edit view is gray. I click
on the folders, reports and navigation buttons in the views
bar to the left and the files are empty. I have asked the
techs at the server that I lease and they said that I do
not have the site loaded on my pc, that is why I can not
open it when I am off the Net.
Does that sound right too you?
Also you stated that editing the website live is not
recommended, why is that?
Again thanks for your kind help :)

How would you expect any program to work on / access an online server when you are offline?

To create a disc based web to work on offline
Open your online site in FP (when you are online)
Then use File Publish Site and select the File system option and enter a folder path on your hard drive - say C:\MySite, and Publish
All
Close your online site in FP and go off line
File Open site and browse to your new local disc based web (C:\MySite)

Any changes you make would be published to your online site using File Publish Site (select FrontPage Server option & changes only)
and entering your URL
