I am going to assume by your question that you are new
not only to Front Page 2003 but any version of Front Page.
In simple terms, there are two types of webs: a disk
based web that resides on your PC and a server based web
that is "on the web".
The disk based web is the web you work on while you are
developing (ie, making changes to your site). You create
and modify your web using Front Page. You can also view
and navigate the site using Front Page's Preview mode OR
check to see how it will look in a browser. You will not
be able to test features that require the Front Page
Extensions in order to function. Their are a number of
functions which require the Extensions of which form
processing (the ability for visitors to fill out a form
on-line and submit it) is an example. You do not have to
be "on the web" to do this.
The server based web is created when you File Publish
your web to your web service provider's system. The
publishing process copies all of the required files from
your Front Page disk based web to the web service
provider. Once this process has been completed, your site
is "on the web". You must be connected to the web through
your internet service provider to perform the publish.
You could open your server based web and make your
changes to the "live" web but, in general, this is not
recommended.
I hope this helps.
