Opening Works files in Office 2000?

Dave Gillingham

I posted the message below to microsoft.public.office.misc but nobody responded.
Can anyone here help?

A friend has a problem which she landed in my lap. She has given me a set of
files which were created in "Version 4".
Their extension is wps, which I understand to be Microsoft Works.
I cannot open them in any Office 2000 application. I reinstalled my old Works v
4.5. It opens the files, but shows garbage.
I downloaded from www.stonehill.edu what purports to be a Works-Word converter -
wp6rtf.exe.
It installs, without asking me where I want it put, & I can't find any
indication of where it went. And I still can't open into Word.

Any advice?

My MS Office Word 2003 opens Works ver 6 & 7 word processor files but
nothing earlier, so you might be out of luck trying to open ver 4 Works wp
files in Office (Word) 2000.

The installed program "should" have put an icon either 1) on your desktop or
2) under "all programs" on the Start Menu.

Try looking in the "program files" folder through Windows Explorer, a folder
labelled "works" or similar.

Using Word to open *.wps files.

or 2.0 directly in Microsoft Word 2002. All data and formatting created in
these versions of Word are fully supported in Word 2002.

Thank you both for your replies. Definitely no icon on my desktop or under
programs. No entry in Control Panel/Remove Programs either. I don't like that!

Wesley, thanks for the links to file converters - I'll follow them up.
