opening Word file

Rex

I had to format my hard drive so downloaded all info then
formatted. I have Windows XP Home originally installed in
April 2002. I have been able to retrieve my Documents and
Favorites files but not the Outlook Express files.I
believe the original installation was with OE version 4
and the reinstall is version 6 The OE file file folder
was saved to CD-R disc. The files are all on word
documents and when I try to open them the result is lines
of squares and symbols with the odd letter but nothing
intelligible. Is there a specific way to open the
document file and get a readable text result. Or is there
a program or an extractor that would enable me to
retrieve legible files. Any info will be greatly
appreciated. Rex

use your backup copies..

Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.
Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com).
Version: 6.0.602 / Virus Database: 383 - Release Date: 3/1/2004

These are my backup copies. Saved to CD-R. I have been
told that when I open the CD-R disc on my computer that
the later version of OE recognises that the content is
out of date (version 4 instead of version 6) and
immediately overwrites it. In the process the content
becomes garbled. Is this a valid explanation of my
problem in getting a readable output?? Rex

Your Outlook Express mail was saved in Word format? That doesn't make
sense. Outlook Express keeps its mail in a .dbx format. Can you open
the files in a text editor, like Notepad?

I saved OE folder to a CD-R disc. When I opened the file
after formatting the C drive it opened with the files in
Word. To open using MS Word (as suggested in "open with")
the file opens in gibberish. Notepad does not improve the
result. Is there an "extracting" medium that may help??

I'm not expert about Outlook Express by any means. Here's a link to a
guy who *is* an expert:

http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/

and here's a list of all the Microsoft newsgroups so you can find one
dealing with Outlook Express:

Good luck,

You OE information isn't necessarily IN the OE folder. It's more likely to
be in a user folder. However, you could have customized it somehow, so...

What file is it that you're trying to open -- both the file name and
extension?
