Opening saved files

When I try to open files or folders that I've saved to my desktop, I get the
error message: THIS FILE DOES NOT HAVE A PROGRAM ASSOCIATED WITH IT FOR
PERFORMING THIS ACTION. CREATE AN ASSOCIATION IN THE FOLDER OPTIONS CONTROL
PANEL. I don't know how to do this and I don't know what it means. I also
lost my Internet Explorer 6 shortcut icon on my desktop and when I go
throught my program's list and right click on it and go to properties, I
don't see the internet options page anymore when I did before. This all
happened when I had to do a system restore and also had to reload all my
McAfee stuff. I use Windows XP home edition. Can anybody tell me how to fix
it so that I can open all the folders and files that I have saved like I
could before?

What type of files are they?
Did you reinstall the application for the file type if needed?
Right click a file.
Click "Open With" in the popup menu.
Select the application that uses the file type in the popup window or click "Choose
Progam" at the bottom.
If you clicked choose program, select the application from the list or browse to the
application.
Once you've selected your app click Ok.

Right click the desktop.
Click Properties > Desktop tab > Customize Desktop.. button.
In the Desktop Icons section, select the icons you want to appear on the desktop.
Click Ok > Apply > Ok.
