Opening Offline Files with Internet Connection, but no VPN

Hi,

I'm trying to set up an XP SP2 based laptop to use offline files when
working away from the office network.

The problem appears when you are working offsite, but with a live internet
connection. Office documents take between 30sec and 2mins to open, even
though Windows is clearly in Offline mode. It seems to be trying to find the
network before opening the offline copy. When completely disconnected from
the internet or any network, it is fine.

I tried setting up the slow connection threshold to force the laptop to only
work offline, but this makes no difference.

Strangely, when manually pinning a shared folder to work offline, this
folder actually worked properly for a whole afternoon with documents opening
immedately, but two hours off the machine being switched off and now they
take just as long to open as the rest!

Can anyone advise or perhaps recommend a good third party solution?

Many thanks.

Hi,

That is usually solved by installing the latest updates for offline
files. There are quite a few to choose from, many of which are
relevant to your scenario (post SP2). From your description it does
seem as if offline files is trying to use the backend version of the
files instead of the local cache. Slow link detection (if updated with
the latest patches) should ensure that you are always connected to the
local cache when under the defined slow link threshold.
In summary, sounds like you need to configure slow link threshold for
offline files and make sure your XPSP2 is running with the latest FILE
VERSIONS for mobsync and other offline file, files.
Note that its normal to see the sync attempt go off even when your on a
slow link, but its a quick sync thats going on and not a full sync. If
you have no conection to the server end file share slow link should
force the use of local cache.

Hope this helps :)
