Opening JavaScript

I have two identical machines, both running XP SP2. Both have the same
version of IE - 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519.

Both are cleaned with Spybot; both use NAV and Norton Firewall, same
versions, same updates.

I log on to a remote Exchange Web Access for messages.

On one machine, I click on the message, and it opens in a new window.

On the other, nothing happens.

In the little Status window, it reads something like
javascript:parent.openNewWindow("/exchange/forms/IPM/NOTE/frmRoot.asp?index=
and then a message ID number

It reads that when I hover over the link, and when I click the link, it
makes the "clicking" sound, but nothing happens.

Both machines have the same, most updated versions of Java.

As far as I can tell, they have the same add-ons, as well.

Thoughts?

Thanks

Forgot to mention - Pop-Up blockers are OFF.

Thoughts..

Is javascript enabled? (Javascript and Java are really two different entities,
the latter a programming language, and the former used often in HTML)
..both use NAV and Norton Firewall..

Are these both firewalls? Generally running two firewalls is frowned on.
Is the XP firewall active too? Check each for JS blocking.

I have absolutely NO idea! How do I check? I always just assumed
"javascript" was evidence that Java was percolating!

No - NAV is Norton's AntiVirus. I DO have Windows Firewall OFF. Would the
AntiVirus have any impact on this?

Thanks for the tips... I will try looking in the Firewall for JS.

Tools | Internet Options | Security
Check Custom Level and see if Active Scripting is enabled.
What Active scripting is enabled, what is set to prompt and what is
disabled?

BOTH machines are the same.

Active Scripting - ENabled
Allow paste operations via script - ENabled
Scripting of Java applets - ENabled

and I checked the Firewall; both machines seem to be set up the same. PLUS I
tried with the Firewall disabled, before even my initial post.

Thanks,

Would you try right-clicking on the message and directing IE to open the
message in a new window, please - and let me know what happens.
You could try it on both machines.

The only reference (in I could find was..

http://groups.google.ca/group/comp....4f3/4cb9d6dffdef1c9f?lnk=st&q="parent.openNew
Window%22+group%3Acomp.lang.javascript&rnum=2&hl=en#4cb9d6dffdef1c9f

Another thing you could try is to install Firefox
e.g. www.downloadfirefox.net
and see if that has the same difficulty, on one machine.

In either case, it opens up a "page cannot be displayed" page...

The address in the Address Bar is the
javascript:parent.openNewWindow("...etc... line

I get the "Please try... Click refresh/Check Connection/See if your Interent
connection settings are being detected/Some sites require 128-bit/If you are
trying t o reach a secure site..."

But, again, that opens up on the machine that "works" and the machine that
doesn't.

We haven't tried Firefox yet because the machine that ISN'T working is my
wife's (it's her email), and she refuses to NOT use IE. I use Firefox for
everything.

(Sorry, MSFT folks!)

Your wife? ..then it should be easy to persuade her ;-)

I just wanted to see if Firefox had the same result, as it would
possibly rule out IE as the cause..

This creates new windows.. and closes them all when the parent closes:

-----------------------------------
<html>
<head>
<script type="text/javascript">
<!--
var childWindowHandles = new Array();

function openNewWindow(url, params) {
childWindowHandles[childWindowHandles.length] = window.open(url, '', params);
}

function closeChildWindows() {
for (var loop=0; loop<childWindowHandles.length; loop++)
if (!childWindowHandles[loop].closed)
childWindowHandles[loop].close();
}
//-->
</script>
</head>
<body onunload="closeChildWindows();">

Click <a href="javascript:blush:penNewWindow('http://www.google.com/',
'height=100,width=200');">here</a> to open another new window.

</body>
</html>

OK, I have no idea what your last post means...

Have not installed FF on the other machine yet - will try that tonight.

But here is an interesting twist:

If I log off XP and Log On as "Guest" and launch IE, it works fine.

=> So, is there a way to compare INTERNAL settings between my logon and the
generic guest, to try to ferret out what the difference is?

SOLVED
=======

Had a "hidden" toolbar - it appears totally blank on the Toolbar menu, and
doesn't show on the toolbars, UNLESS YOU DRAG THE TOOLBARS 'DOWN'....

And it turns out to be a Norton Firewall menu, which included the option
"Block pop-ups on this site".

Now, why it's such a phantom toolbar is another issue, but at least it turns
out to be something "simple".

Thanks for the help, sorry to be so much trouble for something so idiotic!

Well it's good that you found the problem!

(The javascript that I sent, if run, creates popup windows - to test IE)

Hi,
Just curious- this may be confusing and frustrating others. Does the Norton
add-on/toolbar/button show up in IE> View> Toolbars? How about Tools> Manage
add-ons?

Other users have been convinced that IE was blocking pop-up or new windows
when the IE pop-up blocker was off.

Well, yes and no.

That's how I finally found the problem.

My toolbars listed were

___________________
| x Standard Buttons
| x Address Bar
| x Links
| x Norton AntiVirus
| x
|--------------------------
| Lock the Toolbars
| Customize
|===============

I had disabled everything I could think of in Add-Ons, but I believe I left
the Symantec stuff alone. (Sorry - I only have one machine with me today.)

I couldn't tell the difference between checking or unchecking the phantom
toolbar - but I was convinced it had to be some kind of malware.

Finally, I dragged my toolbars to cover almost the entire screen - and then
enabled it; lo and behold, there were my Norton Personal Firewall options,
and included in that was a checkbox for "Block pop-ups from this site." I
disabled that, and now I'm good to go.

I suppose I should uninstall and reinstall Norton Firewall to clean that up,
but the license expires next month and I'm sure I can find some open source
firewall that's every bit as good.

So, I am 99.9 percent certain the Firewall toolbar SHOULD show up when
selected in Toolbars - and that it should show up as a named option in the
Toolbar menu! In my case it didn't for whatever reason, and hence my
confusion.

But there are so many places to check for pop-up blocking now, it's crazy
madness to figure them all out!
