Opening Folders

On my laptop when I try to open folders instead of them opening up I get a
search box. For example, when I double click "My Computer" it shows me what
is on my computer, but when I double click "Local Disk (C:)" I get the
typical search window instead of a list of what's on my hard drive. When I
right click Local Disk (C:) I get a list of options. I noticed the first
option is "Search" instead of "Open". So I have to right click every time
and scroll down to open. The crazy thing is it didn't always do this. But I
don't know what I could have done to cause this and I can't figure out how to
fix it. I have a Toshiba Laptop with some proprietary controls and programs
running XP Home Edition.

Hello!

Sounds like something messed up with the default actions.

Easy way to fix it.

Open any explorer Window - My Documents, My Computer etc.
Click Tools along the top
-> Click Folder Options...
--> Click File Types
---> Scroll down the list of files types until you find Folder
----> Select it and click Advanced, you'll get a new window with "actions"
listed.
-----> Click Open and then click on Set Default.

That should do it, you can use the same method to control other files types,
drives etc.

If you run into problems, like Open has vanished from the list just post
back!

Hope that helps!

Hi Carl,

Issue: Search Companion Starts If You Double-Click a Folder

This problem occurs when you alter the "Drive" / "File Folders" entries via
File Types dialog, to add a "Command Prompt here" or "Print Directory"
feature for folders. (example)

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=321379
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=321186

Click Start/Run and type this command to fix this problem:
regsvr32 /i shell32.dll
(Courtesy of David Candy)

To fix this manually via registry:

If this problem is seen for Drives:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell
Set (default) to "none" (without ")

If this problem is seen for folders:

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell]
Set (default) to "none" (without ")
