Opening folders in a new window

My folders stopped opening in a new window on 2 of 3 computers running Vista.
I have checked the 'Folder Settings' in the control panel to insure that the
settings have not been changed. 1 desktop stopped opening them as set after 1
month, the other desktop worked properly for about 9 months. The 3rd laptop
is still working properly after 2 months. The laptop is the only 1 still
doing it as set, it is running Vista premium. The 2 desktops that are not
working as set; 1 is running Vista Premium and 1 Vista Basic. I have compared
folder settings between all three computers and can't see any difference. Is
there some other settings some where that I've missed? Or a program I can use
to trouble-shoot this problem?

I cannot help but instead add my identical story. In my case a laptop
stopped opening subfolders in new windows after 20 days. No amount of
tweaking the folder options -no matter how you get into them- makes any
difference. At about the same time new folders that I created and some old
ones have reverted to the movie format so the only details I can choose are
moview detail. This is not helpful for wordprocessor files.

Nobody can help with this one? Another forum maybe? I really don't want to do
a reinstall.

Thank you, it's doing it properly now. I hate doing reinstalls:)
But why is the navigation pane a problem now when it wasn't before, and why
is it not a problem on my laptop? Thanks again.
