recently i have been unable to open files i have downloaded e.g. plugins!
(other stuff too)
after downloading and saving, the box comes up with the options to open etc,
when i click to open, the box seems to be opening the file for a second
then immediately disappears!
this has just started to occur in the last few days, i have mcafee and avg
and nothing comes up on these at all.

HI Michelle,

That's the problem. You have too much protection. Uninstall both McAfee
and AVG. Clean out your \Temp Folders. Run Disk Cleanup. Schedule a complete
Chkdsk and then reboot to run.

Then use a Windows Registry Cleaner, like TuneUp Utilities 2007 at
http://www.tune-up.com .

Once you did all that, then pick one Anti-Virus program and reinstall.
Then set the options for that Anti-Virus program and see what happens. Both
Anti-Virus programs run in the background, thus create conflict and problems
for the user.

I have to partially disagree with thecreator--a registry cleaner (in my
opinion) should only be used as a last resort--when everything else has
failed. And then, it should be used extremely carefully.

You shouldn't run two AV programs as they could be working at cross purposes
with each other--I'd dump McAfee. After getting rid of one of them, see if
that fixed the problem. I am betting that it probably won't. If the error
continues, see if you have a restore point that is earlier than the onset of
the problem and do a restore. You can find info in the Help file on the
start menu: system restore

I was wondering if either of these methods work, before I try any of it. I
am having the same problem, however, I am only running McAfee. I did
download Windows Defender, just today to see if that helped and it found no
spyware or other malicious software. However, this didn't change the
problem. Also, in the control panel, I can only open a select number of
items in there.

Some of my programs, I can right click and select run as....then I must
uncheck the first box that reads....protect my computer from.... Those will
open. Not all of my programs have that option though.

Thanks for any help.
