Opening E-mail Attachment

D

David Doucet

Thanks to the help given here, I'm able to open my PowerPoint Slide Shows.
However, I can't open a .pps extension directly from an e- mail attachment.
I have to save it.....saving it any place then allows me to open it.
I'll double click on the attachment and I see a box stating "Do you want to
open this file?" It states that it's going to open it with Microsoft
PowerPoint Slide Show. I have a choice between clicking on "Open" or
"Cancel". When I click on "Open", I get a pop-up box that states:
"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing
this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel."

As I stated, if I save the attachment ANY WHERE, I can then open it in the
PowerPoint Slide Show Viewer. What am I doing wrong ?

Thanks,
David

John, thank you. However the link you suggested pertains to Presentations
being attached to e-mail and changing the extension from PPT to PPS. This
still gets me back to my problem of not being able to open the PPS extension
when attached to e-mail without first saving it to any place in my computer.

When you click on the paperclip do you not get the filename of the
attachment and the option to save the attachment? If you click on the
filename you will get the option to open it.

Thanks for your comments. However, if you'll go back and read my post,
you'll see my problem isn't identifying the file name nor the option to save
or open it. The problem is , when I try to open the PPS attachment directly
from the e-mail attachment, it won't open directly........I have to save it
some place (ANY place) before it'll open. Otherwise I get the error message
mentioned in my post.....which is:
<< "This file does not have a program associated with it for
performing this action.
Create an association in the Folder Options control
panel." >>
I do have a program associated with it because I can open it from any saved
location.....just not directly from the e-mail that has the attachment. I
use Outlook Express for e-mail. I feel that there must be a setting I'm
missing......being a novice, I just don't know where to look.
Thanks again,
David

Save the file , then right click on it, select properties, set the opens
with option to whatever you have on your system, the PowerPoint viewer or
the full version of PowerPoint

Can't open attached presentations from within Outlook Express after applying
Windows XP SP2
http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00657.htm

Also, see John Langhans's posts in this thread:
http://groups.google.com/group/micr...blic.powerpoint&rnum=1&hl=en#aa012bbc69fbba1e

I realize that these threads discuss the PPT Viewer, not the full version of
PPT, but I don't see where you mentioned which you're using. If this is
happening with the full version of PPT, then it's probably some security
setting somewhere for your email client. You know, like the one that blocks
EXE and ZIP files from Outlook....

Thank you. I think you've finally pointed me in the right direction!! It
always amazes me that people like yourself seem to know where to go for the
solutions to problems. I only downloaded the PPS Viewer. The only reason
was a friend sent me an attachment with the .pps extension and I couldn't
open it. I have no reason to have the full PPT or the PPS...just the PPS
Viewer. When I purchased this computer from Dell 6 months ago It had the
Windows XP installed and the SP2. I'll let you know how I make out. Thanks
again.

Echo S,
Thank you, you're amazing! I went to where you suggested, downloaded
and then ran "Shyam Pillai's Power Point Viewer Registry Fix. And, the
problem's fixed!! Pls. send me your invoice as an attachment. If I can
open it, I'll pay it immediately :)
Again, thank you very much.

I have MS Outlook Express V6. I just downloaded PP Viewer, 2003. Is there
a fix to allow me to open the slide shows by simply clicking on the
attachment in Outlook Express, or do I have to save every one of them first?
Thanks for your help.

M

Michael Koerner

Have you installed the Viewer? If so find one of your PowerPoint
presentations and make sure that the file association point towards the
PowerPoint viewer. Once that is done, selecting open in OE will open the
presentation in the viewer.

Thx for the quick response. I believe the Viewer installed successfully. I
displays in my "Add or Remove" programs Control Panel listin, and I have the
PP Viewer Icon on my desktop. Not sure what you mean when you say make sure
the file association points towards the PP Viewer. The error message I get
when clicking on the attachment in Outlook Express is "This file does not
have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an
association in the folder options panel." How do I do this or what it is that
you are recommending. Thanks in advance.

Steve, I downloaded the fix, and extracted it, but it doesn't seem to run.
In fact, I can't find it using the the MS Search function. Windows said it
was extracted to C:Documents and settings\Stu Pinkerton\local
settings\temporary internet files\content.IE5\RH56hv37\PVREGFIX[1]. What to
do? Thanks again in advance for your help

Hmm. Sounds like Windows is being its usual bad self and hiding stuff.

Make Windows show file extensions and hidden files

Echo S. I too thank you immensely as I have tried without luck for months
and even getting no help from a computer software specialist. I now can open
up the OE pps file attachments directly. A simply solution but not easy to
detect w/o your good help. Thanks again.
