Opening Documents and Settings\ Administrator folder requires PC to be online.

When I click on the icon of the Documents and Settings \ Administrator
folder:

- if work offline is ticked I get the popup message "Feature unavailable
while offline"
I see the files if I click X or Cancel

_ if not connected to the internet I get the message "Internet connection
error"
I see the files if I click Cancel (3 times)

Is this normally expected behaviour for XP home?

If so, why is an internet connection needed?

If not, how can the behaviour be corrected?

No it is not to be expected. What are your anti-virus and anti-spyware
arrangements. What firewall is enabled?

Thanks for your answer Gerry.
I have windows XP firewall enabled, and anti-virus and anti-spyware from
windows update.
Is there a way to find out what's calling for the internet connection?

G

Gerry

What do you mean by "anti-virus and anti-spyware from windows update."
The only anti-virus from Windows Update is the monthly Windows Malicious
Software Removal Tool. I do hope you are not solely relying on that for
detection and protection. We can suggest freeware software if you have
none installed.

I think we should confirm you have adequate anti-virus and anti-spyware
programmes operating on your computer first before trying to identify
what is using your internet connection.

Self Help Answer.
I've found the folder template was set as "Video"
Setting the template to 'Documents' stopped the unexpected behaviour.

The solution relates to a WMP9 post of July 13, 2003 by warrens who says:

QUOTE
Right-click on the folder which is offending you, choose Properties. Go to
the Customize tab. You will find that the template used for this folder is
likely 'Music', 'Music Artist', or 'Music Album'. XP uses these modes to
provide those extra content-menu options, as well as display the actual
album covers on top of the folder icons when in Thumbnails mode. WMP9 can
get those album covers for you automatically, or you can set your own
picture on the Customize tab.

If you don't want to use this feature, choose the 'Documents' template.
Apply it to all sub-folders, too, if you want.

Sorry I cannot relate your solution to the problem you described
earlier.

Thanks again Gerry for your responses. I can't say I can see the relation
between problem and solution. But it seems that if you click on a folder
with certain templates that WMP9 recognises, then XP invokes additional
actions. I also observe that opening WMP9 triggers data transfer when the
computer is connected to the internet. Given that windows update removes
malicious software, these actions must be benign.

To be sure the problem has been fixed, I deleted the Administrator folder
and then created another automatically by starting in safe mode. The new
Administrator folder so created has the document template. Clicking on the
new Administrator folder whilst offline or not connected now opens the
folder without triggering the popup messages.

It may resolve the problem you had noticed but you have still not
answered my question about anti-virus and anti-spyware arrangements,
What are they?

"Given that windows update removes malicious software, these actions
must be benign.". This is a dangerous assumption to make!
