"Open Or Save" dialog on MPEG launch...?

K

Kenneth

Howdy,

On one of my Win2000 systems if I click on an MPEG link, a
dialog opens warning me of the harm that can be done my
system by certain files, and asking if I wish to Open, Save,
or Cancel.

I always want the MPEG to launch Media Player, but for the
life of me, I can't find the setting. On all of my other
Win2000 systems, the MPEG files just launch.

Can you assist?

Sincere thanks,

Hi Steve,

I appreciate your response, but...

The problem is not the assignment of the file type. The
problem is that the dialog asking if I wish to Save or Open
always appears.

If (as I always do) I click to Open, Media Player launches
properly.

This would appear to be some sort of security setting, but I
have not been able to locate it.

Thanks again for any further thoughts,

It's possible you're system doesnt have the required codecs for some
file types. Try

Hi Steve,

Again, I appreciate your suggestion, but if I were missing a Codec, how
could Media Player launch properly when I click on Open.

As you understand, I am trying to avoid the appearance of the "Open or
Save" dialog every time I click on an MPEG.

All the best,

Kenneth

I assume you've tried
Start
Set Program Access and Defaults
Choose a default media player
select Windows Media Player
click OK

Hi Steve,

This is really getting strange, and I can't figure out what
to do to correct the problem...

Here's what happened:

I looked, and found that "Use my current Media Player" was
checked. (That was, BTW, Windows Media Player.) I then
checked "Windows Media Player" instead.

I launched IE, clicked on a link to an MPEG, and indeed, it
seemed that the problem was corrected:

The first six or eight links launched Windows Media Player
properly.

But then, on the next attempt, the (familiar) dialog opened
again: "Open Or Save". I clicked "Open" and Windows Media
Player launched, but with Audio only. An image appeared in
the window, but it did not move though the soundtrack
continued.

I then went into Media Player's Tools | Options | File
Types, and UN-checked MPG files. (I did that because I knew
from past experience that it would correct the audio only
problem.) With that modification, when I click on an link to
an MPEG I get the "Open or Save" dialog that I am trying to
avoid, but when I click on "Open" the MPEG launches with
Audio and Video working properly.

I am baffled by all of this...

Might you have any further thoughts about it?

Sincere thanks as before,

Check your PC for spyware and virus's.

Remove any other media players (ie Real Player & Quicktime)

If your need access to Real and Quicktime consider the alternative
versions at

http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Real_Alternative.htm

http://www.free-codecs.com/download/QuickTime_Alternative.htm

It sounds like something is kicking in and resetting your default player
to something else.

Hi again Steve,

The system is well protected: Kaspersky, MS Anti-Spyware,
and Spybot.

To my surprise, neither RP nor QT are on the system. (I felt
sure that I would find both, but the remembered that I
re-installed Windows 2000 on the system about a month ago
and so, lots of software that I once had is not on the box.)

This is a strange one...

Thanks again,

Try installing the Alternaive ones I mentioned in an earlier post, your
problem really does sound as if you do not have the correct codecs to
read certain .mpeg's. Those programs will provide that functionality to
your system I think.

It may be that your system is fine with *.mpg files but struggles with
*.mpeg files.

Hi Steve,

I just installed the MS Codec package, re-booted, and have
the same behavior as before.

This is no tragedy, but it is odd.

Might you have any further thoughts?

Did you try the Real & Quicktime Alternatives mentioned above?

Did you try the Real & Quicktime Alternatives mentioned above?

Hi Steve,

Perhaps I am lost here, but...

No media player is on the system other than Windows MP.

No Real Player, no QuickTime, nothin'...

So, no I did not try the alternatives you suggested, but I
certainly may have misinterpreted the purpose of your
suggestion.

Thanks again,

Please try adding those two programs "Alternative" versions as they can
add missing functionality.

Media Player may well recognise the file extender BUT there are various
ways of encoding movie files often with the same extender.

Hi Steve,

I installed both of the alternatives you suggested, but left
WMP as the MPEG default.

With those settings, I have the problem I have described.

Is that what you wanted me to try?

Thanks again,

Yes, but what happens if you install those alternatives but let them
take over whatever defaults they want to?

Hi again Steve,

I tried it as you suggested above, but the result is the
same:

When I click on a MPEG the dialog asks me if I want to Save
or Open, and if I click Open, WMP launches...

I then looked in the Tools | File Types of WMP, and find
that MPEG is NOT checked.

Weird...

Any other thoughts?

Thanks again,
