Open <> Insert...?

Howdy,

I run Word 2000 (9.0.6926 SP-3) under Win 2000 SP4.

Recently, I have found that if I Open an existing DOC it
appears differently from the result I see if I Insert the
DOC into another open DOC.

Specifically:

I have a DOC that consists of a Map (saved originally from
some mapping software as a BMP file. Let's call it Map.DOC.

If I Open Map.DOC it appears on screen as a seemingly
endless string of characters. When I first saw that, I
assumed that it had become corrupt. But then, for some
reason, I decided to Open a new blank DOC. Once that blank
DOC was on screen, I clicked to Insert | File | Map.DOC.

Immediately, the map appeared on screen looking fine.

This is not happening with only one DOC...

I have several "Checklists" that we use for various kinds of
packing. (These are lists of text and each line is preceded
with an upper ASCII character that looks like an open
square. We use that as the "checkbox.") These are all "Read
Only" and we typically use them by inserting them into blank
DOCs as I described above.

I just needed to modify one of these checklists and so
opened it directly. When I did, the "checkbox" squares
appeared not as they should but instead as "(" (without the
quotes.)

But, when I attempted to insert it in another blank DOC all
looked fine.

Finally, I tried this:

I opened a blank DOC and inserted the checklist DOC. It look
fine. I then attempted to save it "over" the old checklist,
that is, to the former filename. It saved properly, but that
did not help. It continued to behave as I have described.

I then thought to open a blank DOC, inserted the checklist
DOC, and saved it to a new name. But then, when I tried to
insert the newly named DOC in a second blank DOC, I got an
error telling me that the file was created with an older
version of Word, and thus, I needed a converter.

What might be the cause of all this? Might you suggest any
solutions?

Very sincere thanks,

K

Hello again,

As I have experimented with this further it has become even
more confusing...

I have other machines on our LAN that run Word and tried to
open the files in question from those machines.

The files opened properly.

That would seem to tell me that the files are good, but that
there is a problem with the installation of Word.

I then ran the Word Detect and Repair function hoping to
correct those problems.

To my surprise, the problem persists.

As before, I would welcome any suggestions about this.

Sincere thanks once again,

B

The machine with the problem probably has been set to "Recover Text
from Any File", which I think is a sticky setting in Word 2000.
