Open FP Web on network

Stephen Green

We have a small office network. We would like to be able to open a FP web
from our laptop on the network (Windows XP Home). The web is on our office
desktop (Windows XP Pro).

We have had alot of trouble trying to figure out what Share settings as well
as FP settings to allow for opening the web from the laptop. Do we need to
install FP extensions on the laptop?

Can anyone help with details on how to accomplish this?

Thanks.

Hi Stephen,

Is the web on your XP Pro running under IIS or are you attempting to open the web as a disk base web? The reason for asking is the
first does not require any sharing permissions the latter does.

You need to install IIS and FP extensions on the desktop. The web must be
accessible using http://machinename/ (where machinename is the name or IP
address of the desktop PC). Then it can be opened by any browser and
FrontPage from any machine on your Network.
If necessary, publish the web from its present location to the web server
(IIS).

The Desktop (the development computer with XP Pro) is running IIS 5.1. I
access it via FP2002 using http:/localhost/...

Thanks.

Ron!

IIS 5.1 and FP Extensions are installed. I usually access the web(s) using
http://localhost/...

There are several webs under localhost.

Thanks for your help.

Thanks, Ron!

I'm able to access the website from the laptop via IE using
http://office/webname, office being the name of the desktop on the network.

When I try to access it from FP on the laptop, I get a password box. when I
enter my User Name and Password, nothing happens - I just get the box back
again.

Sometimes I get a message saying "You do not have permission to make changes
to this document. Do you want to open a read-only copy?". If I say yes, I
still get stuck at the User Name / Password box.

Can you suggest what's going on?

Thanks again.

I have the same problems as you describe, and am in pretty much the
same situation.
I have repeatedly asked for help/advice on this issue, here and in the
XP Networking NGs, and I have not got any further than you are
currently getting (!). I monitor this NG, so If you do get a useful
answer elsewhere, please share it here!

Thanks, Ron!

Sorry I can't assist further on this.
I have experienced the problem once - and the cause was no password at all
had been given to the user account for opening the web. FP *must* have a
password configured in the extensions. I do not think this applies in
Stephen's case.
