Open Excel in different windows

When our company went to Office XP we saw a major difference in the way Excel
acts. This difference has cost a lot of lost data, and tons of frustration.
We find that you can be working on an excel file, and then you might open
another excel file to look at or even for copying purposes. The problem is
that when you close the 2nd excel file, excel automatically closes ALL excel
files. Yes, it does ask you if you want to save changes to the 1st excel
file, but after all the years of Microsoft prompting us to save any file that
we have open, even when nothing has changed, people tend to just say NO to
this prompt, and then their data from the fist excel file is lost. I find
that this is because Excel is using the same window to show each file. You
can keep the data from being lost by clicking the lower of the 2 X’s (nobody
remembers to do this), or by saying Yes to the save data box (people aren’t
reading the details of the questions). Is there a way to force Excel to open
in different windows? I see that Word operates in the same old manner, and
that just adds to the confusion, because for Word you can use the same close
X that we have always used, but for Excel we need to remember to use the
inner close button.

On experimentation, I find that even though the taskbar shows 2 excel
windows they are treated as one. If I’m working on my first excel window,
and move it them switch to my second window it shows in the same place.
There is no way to show both at once. I have already tried the following:
Tool…Options…General, Clicking and un-clicking “Ignore other Applicationsâ€
Tool…Options…View, Clicking and un-clicking “Startup Task Paneâ€
Tool…Options…View, Clicking and un-clicking “Windows in Taskbarâ€
I also tried to go into file types from explorer, and selecting the advanced
tab after selecting XLS, only to find that there isn’t an advanced tab,
instead it has been replaced with a “restore†tab.

I, too, have been frustrated with this quirk. Also, if you right click on
the icon on the task bar and click "Close", it closes only that file.
However, it also shows the 'Hot-Key' of Ctrl+F4. This however, does close
Excel and ALL open files! Arrrgggghhh. Plus, Ctrl+F4 is not displayed on the
File menu, either by Close or Exit...this hotkey is really EXIT, as is the
'X' in the upper right corner, although the tooltip says "Close". The
smaller 'x' below lists "Close Window" on the tooltip.

I like to open one instance of excel and I only have one window in the taskbar.

I'd turn off that windows in taskbar so that it worked more like xl97 (from
where you upgraded?)

Then if the user closes the excel window, they should realize what they're
doing.
