oobe.exe

Bought a PC from a local dealer about two years ago with
Windows XP preinstalled. My 19 year old son is VERY hard
on computers - installs programs and then pulls out CDs in
the middle of installation, goes online during severe
thunderstorms, even changed registry settings for my
monitor while playing video games in DOS mode - you get
the idea. About two months ago he was again "installing"
a video game on this pc, also while online. When I came
home that evening, the computer was inoperable. Had to
replace the modem, hard drive and motherboard. Dealer
reinstalled XP but I'm having problems. The product key
is fine and Windows installs OK, but the files in the
system32/oobe folder and subfolders don't expand properly
off the CD. All other files appear to be normal, except I
can't load my printer, but that's a minor problem compared
to the prospect of repeated XP Home installations each 30
days. The oobebaln.exe file runs OK, so I know how many
days I have left, but that's about it. None of the
workarounds discussed in various places such as bypassing
the GUI and running the program from the command line
work, as the oobe.exe file does not work. The computer
guy is overloaded right now as this is a college town, so
I am turning to you MVPs for some help. Otherwise, I'll
contact him in a couple of weeks. Thanks.
