only system sounds play

System sounds play, but sounds from all other apps don't play - not Media
Center, not games, nothing. Double clicking the speaker in the task bar pops
"There are no active mixer devices available...." The Sounds and Audio
Devices Properties window shows "No Audio Device" and all other options
greyed. I've re-installed the latest Realtek AC'97 driver, but there's no
change. Device Status says the device is working properly. Any advice?

Have you gone to the realtec site to find out if your driver works on XP?
It's quite likely that the 'latest' driver is for Vista, and you need the one
for XP.
