Only one page shows

Hello.

In every word document I start from scratch I can only type on one page.
Page 2 and beyond do not open. So if I am atthe end of page 1 and keep typing
it stays on page 1. If I press ENTER nothing hapopens; it stays on page 1.
This happens on every new Word document I start.

If I open an old document with more than one page I can read all the pages.

This problem occurs no matter how I set up Page Setup or any other settings.
It happens no matter what I do.

Word 2003 with WinXP

Please advise. Thank you

In a new, blank document, click Format | Columns. Choose the "One" option
(even if it already appears to be selected). If that fixes the problem, open
the normal.dot template as a file and repeat the procedure there. When you
are done, save and close normal.dot.

To locate normal.dot, you can search for it in Windows (be sure to search
hidden files and folders). To open it properly, right-click and choose Open
from the context menu.

Thank you Stefan. That did fix the problem but I am not sure where to find
the normal.dot file. I went to Windows in Windows Explorer and serached for
it but did not find it. Can you give me a bit more detail as to where to find
it.

Thanks again.

It is a hidden file in the folder defined at tools > options > file
locations > user templates.

Hi Graham,

Thanks for replying. When I click on User Templates I get the Templates
folder, and the SmartArt Graphics folder is there, but nothing in the
SmartArt Graphics folder. Is there anything else I should do? Thank you

To display hidden files and folders in Windows, use the Folder Options
dialog box (which you can access via any Explorer window).

Hi Guys,

I am so sorry to bother you again. I am just confused now. I opened windows
explorer and opened hidden files. But when I go back to Word and click
Tools|Options|File Locations|User Templates and click it I get the Modify
Location window with Templates|Smart Art Graphics but there is nothing in the
Smart Art Graphics.

What am I doing wrong? I am sorry to trouble you but can you tell me exactly
what to do step by step? I just can't figure it out.

Thank you for your time.

Exit Word, make sure that you can see hidden files and folders in *Windows
Explorer*, and then you should be able to locate normal.dot. At least in
Windows XP, the path is usually something like this: C:\Documents and
Settings\<user_name_here>\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates.

Or use the Search function (you can press Windows key+F) in Windows to
locate the file. Make sure that you set the option to search hidden files
and folders.

Thank you Stefan. I loctaed normal.dot and set the columns to 1. I started
closing the documnet and it asked me to save it and so I saved it as "Doc 1"
in My Documnents folder. I then opened Word but the default is still 2
columns. Is there anything else I'm supposed to do?

Thank you for your time.

If you actually saved Normal.dot as Doc 1, then you haven't accomplished
anything. You must open Normal.dot, modify it, and then just Save (not Save
As).

And if "Doc 1" was the suggested filename, then you hadn't really opened
Normal.dot for editing but instead had created a new document based on it.
To open Normal.dot from Windows Explorer, you can't double-click; the
default action for .dot files is New, so this just creates a new document.
You must right-click and choose Open.
