online Exchange mode - Preview Pane behaviour question

and even OWA is not an option for me, as the employees who use the
shared mailbox frequently change the FROM field when replying to
messages in the shared folder - something not possible in OWA.

update - I haven't had a chance to test Outlook 2007 and the
securetemp folder.

However, I have tested Outlook 2003. Surprise - no problem. When I
single-click on a message in the Preview Pane (in the additional
mailbox), comes up very quickly. Nothing is written to the securetemp
folder - the attachment is not automatically downloaded.

This is exactly what I need, and what I was hoping would happen in
Outlook 2007.

So, I suspect the problem is Outlook 2007 - specifically the new
"Preview an attachment in the Reading Pane" feature (http://
office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook/HA101185281033.aspx)

I can't confirm this yet until I see what happens with Outlook 2007
and the securetemp folder, but the "preview attachment" feature above
would probably need Outlook 2007 to download the attachment to
securetemp before it's opened (unfortunately for me)

I don't believe this is true. The attachment never gets downloaded
independently of the remainder of the mesage body, since the attachment is
PART of the message body. If you can see the message in the preview pane,
the attachment HAS been downloaded. This would be true for ANY mail client
that allows you to see the message body. Outlook 2003's behavior is to
write the attachment to the secure temp folder if you open it from within
the message.

the behaviour I am observing in Outlook 2003 (with Cached Exchange
Mode on) with additional mailbox:

In the additional mailbox:

When I single-click on a message, I see a preview in the Preview Pane.
Nothing is downloaded to the securetemp folder (except a gif or bmp,
if the message has an embedded image). The attachment (in this case, a
Word document), is not downloaded to securetemp.

When I double-click the message, same behaviour. When I double-click
the attachment and open it, it is at that point that the attachment is
written to secure temp.

I will test the above with Outlook 2007 and report.

The above is the behaviour that I want with the additional mailbox,
especially in Outlook 2007.

If you use cached mode, the attachment should be d/l in ol2003. in classic
mode its on the server till you open it.

did you try disabling the attachment preview option in 2007?
tools, trust center, attachments.

Not the the securetemp, but it's certainly downloaded. As I said,
attachments are part of the body of the message. You can't see any part of
the body without downloading the entire body.
When I double-click the message, same behaviour. When I double-click
the attachment and open it, it is at that point that the attachment is
written to secure temp.

Exactly what I said.

Yes, doesn't make any difference with the additonal mailbox behaviour
unfortunately.

Are you scanning incoming email with a virus or spam scanner? That will slow
it down. If you have personal firewalls, different settings can also slow
it down (and some scan email for viruses and spam).

yes I am, but the problem machine and the OK machine both run the same
A/V (AVGFree). This issue has me stumped. On one machine, they open
the additional mailbox, click on a message to preview it, and it
appears straight away (regardless if there is no attachment or a 10MB
attachment). On the other, they click (to preview) on a small message
- it appears relatively quickly. They click on a message with a 10MB
attachment - Outlook hangs until the whole 10MB attachment is
downloaded. Frustrating....

yes, they are brand new identical PCs - XP Pro SP2, Outlook 2007. I
rang MS but they said they will charge me for a support incident :( so
no luck there.
