Onebox.com & Outlook

Hi,

trying to use Outlook 2003 (version 11.5608.5606). I followed the
directions from Onebox.com to use outlook as my email interface. The
problem is, I can receive email A-OK, but I can't send email. Here are
my settings:

Incoming mail server (IMAP): pop.onebox.com
Outgoing mail server (STMP): stmp.onebox.com

I have my username & password stored in t he appropriate boxes, and it
clearly works for the incoming stuff... I even tried the "Log on Using:
(user specified info dialog boxes on the [More Settings] . [Outgoing
Server] page to no avail.

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance

If this is literally correct, your problem is that you misspelled "smtp".
If not, then post the error messages, if any, that you see.

Argh!

Nope, I made a typo in the post. In outlook it is "smtp.onebox.com". Is
is perhaps case sensitive?

It is not case sensitive.

Turns out that "pop.onebox.com" and "smtp.onebox.com" are exactly the same
server. Irrelevant, but interesting (to me, anyway).

In addition to the "My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication" box,
have you checked the radio button that says "Use same settings as my
incoming mail server"? Have you disabled any mail scanning by your
antivirus program? Have you tried selecting the radio button that says "Log
on to the incoming mail server before sending mail"? Do you receive any
error messages when you try to send? If so, what is their exact text? Have
you enabled diagnostic logging to see what's actually happening between your
Outlook and the mail server?

OK, Here's what I can say:

"In addition to the "My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication"
box,
have you checked the radio button that says "Use same settings as my
incoming mail server"?" -- Yes. That is the current setting

"Have you disabled any mail scanning by your antivirus program?" --
Aha! This may be a culprit. I'm using McAfee virusscan and the box fes
for scanning inbound & outbound email were checked. I'll try unchecking
the outbound box and see what happens.

"Have you tried selecting the radio button that says "Log on to the
incoming mail server before sending mail"?" - I don't know. I've looked
all over the setting and advanced settings and I don't see that one.

"Do you receive any error messages when you try to send? " -- Yes, I
do.

"If so, what is their exact text?" -- Argh! I'm at the office now so I
don't have it in front of me, but I seem to recall that it was along
the line of unable to connect withthe server.

"Have you enabled diagnostic logging to see what's actually happening
between your Outlook and the mail server? " -- No. I dodn't know I
could nor how. I'll explore that one too.

Thanks for the feedback, I'll try it with the virus scanning off, and
I'll see if I can find out how to log the errors.

Update...

Did a bit more googling on the generic "can't send email" and got a
reference to some ISPs blocking Port 25 (whatever that is) to fight
spam. So I went to sbcglobal.net and did a bit of searching and found
that since September 2004 they have been blocking Port 25 and I instead
have to use Port 587 (I think that's the number). So, I have re-set my
outgoing port from 25 to 587 and I'll try that when I get home.

Sheesh! Why do I have to be part programmer just to send email. Doesn't
the internet know we don't all want to be programmers? We just want to
use the software...

I'll update with success or failure.

Failure!

Here's the error message:

Task 'Onebox.com' - Sending reported error (0x80042109) : outlook is
unable to connect to your outgoing MTP e-mail server. If you continute
to receive this message, contact your ISP.

What's next?

It's at the bottom of the "Outgoing Server" tab.

I don't have that button. My choices on th eOutgoing Server tab are:

My server (SMTP) requires authentication

then 2 choices

1) Use same settings as my incoming mail server

2) Log on using
User Name: [box to fill in]
Password: [box to fill in]

Then Lof on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA)

Tha's it.

I'm running outlook 2003 (11.5608.5606)

Hope that provides some insight...

I don't have that button. My choices on th eOutgoing Server tab are:
....snip...
Then Lof on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA)

I have the button right below this checkbox.
I'm running outlook 2003 (11.5608.5606)

And I'm running Outlook 2003 (11.8002.6562) SP2

What is back on the main account page, where you find the "More Settings"
button? Do you have the "Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA)"
option checked or unchecked?
