One Users VISTA experiance

I built a new computer from the least costly parts I could get. ECS
motherboard and E6300 processor, Sapphire 1900GT video, a couple of
Seagate 300 Gig hard drives and a Samsung DVD burner. Also a $15 modem
and a $15 analog TV tuner (KWorld). I put XP on it first because I
put the box together before Vista was released. So my XP install was
little more then the OS and a very few utilities I like to use.

When Vista came out I got a copy of VISTA Ultimate and ran it as an
upgrade over the XP install. I left the modem and TV tuner in the box.
No problems with the install. The TV tuner didn't work after the
install and I downloaded updated Vista Drivers for it and after an
hour of futzing around got it working. The modem seems ok without
doing anything. I had to update my Nero Enhanced to the latest and
it's working OK. I also have an old Garmin Mapsource program for my
old Garmin Emap GPS unit. It loads data from the PC to the handheld
thru a several years old program that works thru the serial port. One
reason I picked the particular ECS MB was because it was one of the
few that still sports a serial port. As with my prior computer
running XP, the mapsource program working thru serial port is very
touchy about not being disturbed while uploading data to the hand held
so I have to leave the PC along while it's doing it's thing. I don't
think it's a vista issue, just the way an old program works with
serial port protocol. I also had to wait a few weeks for HP to come
out with Vista drivers for my ALL in One 6210 printer but the drivers
are out and I installed them and the printer works fine.

The only issue I have not resolved yet is that Yahoo Videos doesn't
work. Every other web site I've tried with videos seems to work fine.

I have noticed a few oddities caused by UAC and turned it off for the
moment.

The program I thought might give me a major headache is Pinnacle
Studio 10.5, which I bought just before getting the new computer. I
had a lot of trouble in the past with not just Pinnacles program but
with other video editing programs on my old computer. I followed the
instructions on Pinnacles web page for installing 10.5 and then
upgrading to 10.8 beta for it to work on Vista. Once installed I did
a quick movie edit and render and it worked perfectly.

The "sleep" mode seems to be working well. Once it hung up but other
then that it's worked fine for the last month. Rather nice to have
the computer go to sleep and then spring back to where I left off in
just a couple seconds.

I don't discount the problems others are having but the bottom line
is that for me Vista is working pretty well. I'm having no more
teething problems with it then I did with XP when it first came out.

Works fine here. I have heard that turning off UAC can break some things,
but I can't quote any specifics on that.

Not sure what did it but at some point the yahoo videos started
working. I did do the uninstall and reinstall of the player as others
have advised although it didn't seem to work at the time. So at the
moment things are pretty much working. Main remaining items are some
utility programs I am waiting for their conversion to vista
compatible. Nothing critical but stuff that I liked having around.
Overall I'm still pretty happy with how it's gone.
