One of my MAIN menu's is missing an item -- namely "FILE"

I'm having trouble with my MS-Word (Part of my MS-Office) ...

You know the top-most menu bar, the one that is standard in most Windows
programs, the one that reads:
"File Edit View Insert Format Tools Table Windows Help"?
Well mine suddenly reads:
"Edit View Insert Format Tools Table Windows Help"

One day it was there, the next it was gone. Now "it's a given" that I COULD
add each of the FILE menu commands to one of the toolbars via "Customize",
but I shouldn't have to. I paid for the "File" menu, and it ought to be there
waiting on me every time.

I've run the "Detect & Repair" under "Help" TWICE ... the first time it
found errors I didn't know I had and claimed to have fixed them ... restarted
Word ... still no "FILE" menu ... ran "D&R" again, no change. I'm at my
whit's end.

I did NOTHING to "Provoke" this "Rebellion" on Word's part.

For the benefit of the Tech-Weanies (or Tech-Weenies) in the crowd I'm
running Windows XP with SP2 and all the latest updates and upgrades.

Right-click any toolbar to display the Customize dialog. Right-click the
File menu and select Reset.

Actually, you don't Right-click the File menu, your go to "Tool Bars" tab
and Right-Click the "Menu Bar" in the list of "Tool Bars", then select
"Reset" and it worked like a champ ... now, what caused it to go away in the
first place ... was it "Operator Error" and how do I prevent it from
happening again?

Yes, you can do it that way, too. While you're in customize mode you can
right-click any menu or toolbar and get a context menu that includes
'Reset'.

.... now, what caused it to go away in the

first place ... was it "Operator Error" and how do I prevent it from
happening again?

Operator error is most common:

1) You're in customize mode and drag the item from the menu, or
2) Press ctl-alt-hyphen: the cursor becomes a large minus sign. Now click
any menu option to remove it.

Either of these can happen accidentally, particularly if you're an energetic
or inebriate user.

Jezebel, thanks for your suggestion on this. Similar to the original request
for help, my Outlook bar lost the 'reply, reply all, forward, etc' items all
the way to the font selection. The right click plus 'standard' restored
everything as I have been accustomed to it being displayed. Closed window,
reopened and it was correct. Great tip. Thanks again.
