One menu takes 60 seconds to appear on mousehover; all others fine

In Microsoft Query Analyzer for SQL Server 2000 (800.194) there are
several main menu options:

File...Edit...Query...Tools...Window...Help

When the mouse hovers over the Tools item, the following menu appears:

Object Browser ->
Object Search ->
------------------
Manage Indexes
Manage Statistics
------------------
Options
Customize

When the mouse hovers over the Object Browser item, the menu below is
supposed to appear, but on my PC (WinXP Pro) this menu has just started
taking 60 seconds to show up!! Everything else is working fine on this
PC, and has been working fine for a couple of years, including this menu
item. What would cause the menu paint to be delayed in that way? When it
finally appears, it works.

Thanks
T

Right-click is slow or weird behavior caused by context menu handlers:

Elmo,
Thanks for the reply.

Since these symptoms appear on mouse-over (not right-click) and also
since the long delay is happening on a submenu of the *main* menu, would
Context Menu handlers be involved?

Regards
T

If not, also try the Start Menu repair shown here:

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Line 117. Restore Taskbar and Start Menu

You might also look through a Google Groups search of the key words.
Someone might have had this discussion before. Change the keywords to
limit or increase the search results.

http://groups.google.com/groups/search?q=start+menu+hover+delay&qt_s=Search+Groups

Since only one folder is slow to open, that suggests the folder contains
large, or damaged files.. On a search of "folder slow to open", I found
these suggestions:

http://groups.google.com/group/micr...lnk=st&q=folder+slow+to+open#10a1d6e744983011
"Do you have an Antivirus program running? If you do try to exclude that
folder."

http://groups.google.com/group/micr...lnk=st&q=folder+slow+to+open#6f6025be09721b97
"Does this by any chance contain a lot of multimedia (and especially
..AVI) files? If so it will be because eExplorer is going through each
file to look for the component parts (AVI is an envelope that may have
several sections) to get out data like codec used, author, etc. You can
turn that search off (but will no longer see info on these properties)
by using regedit to go to
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.avi
and deleting the PersistentHandler sub-key "
