one lonely computer on a peer to peer net

Howdy,
I have 2 desktop machines and 2 laptops, all XP/SP2, on a peer to
peer network. All seeing each other along with a network printer.
We took the laptops out on vacation and then plugged them back in
upon return. One laptop had no problems and connected just fine
back up to the network. The other has refused to do the same. When
on vacation the two laptops were connected; one direct connect to a
router the problem machine via 802.11/bridge. Upon arrival home I
set the workgroup name back to it's original setting.
This machine can ping all the others but not see any assets. When I
click on 'View Workgroup Computers' I only get this one displayed.
Now I looked up this problem at http://www.chicagotech.net/ and they
say that this is a 'name resolution' issue. Unfortunately I don't
know what this means or how to resolve it. When I right click on
the local area connection icon and select 'repair' it gives the
following message: "Windows could not finish repairing the problem
because the following action cannot be completed: Clearing NetBT'
Also, I made sure that the window firewall is turned off on both the
General and Advanced Tabs and Zonealarm is shutdown. Thinking that it
was improbable but thought it worthwhile to try I installed Netbuei.
Didn't make any difference so I pulled it back out.
Now then my friend says to uninstall TCP/IP and then reboot and
reinstall it. However when I go to the LAN Properties dialog and
highlight TCP/IP the uninstall button is greyed out. I see here in the
newsgroup that people recommend 'Browstat.exe' so I downloaded it, ran
it and it gave a list of commands which have absolutely no meaning to me.
From another post I found the injunction to do the following:
"Let's start with logs from "browstat status", "ipconfig /all", "net
config server", and "net config workstation", from each computer." So
here are those:

Chuck, Thank you for the response. However it is after 8:00pm and I took
a look at that nitecruzr.blogspot.com page and it is going to take me
being wide awake to even half understand it. And, I think in the morning
I'm going to bring over the laptop and set it here on the desk so I can
compare it's settings with the desktop one. I'll get back to you in the
morning. However, I was told by my local dealer several years ago that
Netbios is not needed at all. Everything should run just fine on TCP/IP.
And in fact it was working without it but if that is what it takes
then I'll get it going! We will see what's what. Tomorrow! Talk to you then.

OK,
Here is what I did! I looked at the pages listed above. After
looking it all over I decided to do what you recommended; install the
netbois. So, I installed the netbios on all the machines. Rebooted all
and lo -- There were the network shared folders on all the machines. The
only problem that came up was that I was no longer able to print to the
network printer. So I reinstalled that several times to no avail but
finally got it going by altering the access port in the printers dialog
box to use a standard TCP/IP port. Oh, it also installed "NWLink
IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Protocol" in addition to the
"NWLink NetBIOS". I take it that this is required also?

BTW, is netbios the same thing as netbui?

Oh yes, one more favor, do you know how to make a computer revert to
requiring a password at boot up? Some time ago I foolishly did something
and now the laptop boots up without showing any logon screen at all. I
am afraid that it is bypassing password security.

IPX / SPX, NetBIOS Over TCP, and NetBEUI are 3 separate and distinct transports.
You only need ONE, and for a small LAN, it is most commonly going to be NetBIOS
Over TCP.

The point is, all computers need to use the same transports. Any corporate LAN,
that I work on, will have a common model for all computers. Design and setup go
hand in hand, and the more closely each computer is a clone of the others, the
better for everybody.

SPX. Nor IPV6. Neither "NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Protocol",
nor "NWLink NetBIOS" are necessary.

Ok,
Here is what I did! I went through your recommended tuts.
On all 4 machines I:
a. Removed NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Protocol and NWLKink Netbios
b. On the Wins Tab of advanced TCP/IP properties unchecked LMhosts (That's the
way it shows on your site.)
c. I went into the setup of the router and could find no mention anywhere of the
router being able to provide Netbios services. So -
d. Checked Enable Netbios over TCP/IP on the Wins tab.


All the other 3 machines are doing great. They all show each other's shares in
MyNetworkPlaces (but not my laptop) and when view workgroup computers is clicked they
do show each other. (But not my laptop)
On this naughty laptop get this: All the shares of the other machines are in fact shown
in MyNetworkPlaces but a click on them gets a Message something like 'You don't have
the proper permissions, etc' plus a verbal burp. Also, Asking to View Workgroup Computers
shows none and, no workgroup computers are shown not even itself.
I went to System Properties and on the Computer Name Tab the Name and Workgroup were
correct. So went over to the three operating machines and did an ipconfig/all. All were
the same but had no mention of the status of Netbios. The absence of a listing for Netbios
status according to your pages means either Default or Enabled so I confirmed on each of
the other machines as being enabled on the wins tab. BUT, on this infidel laptop ipconfig
says Netbios over Tcp/ip is disabled yet on the Wins tab of TCP/IP advanced properties
it shows Netbios enabled. This then is the problem. If actually disabled then why show it
as enabled?

I'm going to assume that the ipconfig report is correct and that somehow
Netbios is not enabled. Now I am really confused and I hope for some inspiration
from you and the others.

Ok,
Here is what I did! I went through your recommended tuts.
On all 4 machines I:
a. Removed NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Protocol and NWLKink Netbios
b. On the Wins Tab of advanced TCP/IP properties unchecked LMhosts (That's the
way it shows on your site.)
c. I went into the setup of the router and could find no mention anywhere of the
router being able to provide Netbios services. So -
d. Checked Enable Netbios over TCP/IP on the Wins tab.


All the other 3 machines are doing great. They all show each other's shares in
MyNetworkPlaces (but not my laptop) and when view workgroup computers is clicked they
do show each other. (But not my laptop)
On this naughty laptop get this: All the shares of the other machines are in fact shown
in MyNetworkPlaces but a click on them gets a Message something like 'You don't have
the proper permissions, etc' plus a verbal burp. Also, Asking to View Workgroup Computers
shows none and, no workgroup computers are shown not even itself.
I went to System Properties and on the Computer Name Tab the Name and Workgroup were
correct. So went over to the three operating machines and did an ipconfig/all. All were
the same but had no mention of the status of Netbios. The absence of a listing for Netbios
status according to your pages means either Default or Enabled so I confirmed on each of
the other machines as being enabled on the wins tab. BUT, on this infidel laptop ipconfig
says Netbios over Tcp/ip is disabled yet on the Wins tab of TCP/IP advanced properties
it shows Netbios enabled. This then is the problem. If actually disabled then why show it
as enabled?

It's not NetBIOS, though, it's NetBIOS Over TCP (aka NetBT). Don't confuse it
with "NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport". NetBT depends upon the
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper service. Check the services, then check again the network
components.

I decided to go back to the beginning so to speak. On the PChuck page

I started at the top with physical problems.



Computer had the following symptoms:
1. Email and Internet access are not affected. They work fine!
2. Nothing shows up in 'My Network Places' nor does anything show when 'View Workgroup Computers' is clicked
3. Even though 'Enable NetBios over TCP/IP' (NetBT) is checked on the WINS tab a 'ipconfig /all' call shows that it
is 'Disabled'.
4. Pings by IP address go through but pings by host name do not.

A. Physical
The physical network itself is done correctly and all cards, cables, etc have been checked, secured and all
computers are directly connected, on the same LAN segment.

B. Logical
The network driver has been reinstalled from the manufacturer's disk that came with the machine and it's website
checked for any upgrades. It was the latest and only driver.
NetBT. Ensured that 'NetBIOS over TCP/IP' is enabled on the Wins tab of Advanced TCP/IP Settings dialog.
However, when 'ipconfig /all' is called via cmd NetBIOS over TCP/IP is shown as disabled. No amount of fussing,
fooling, or farting could change that. Until, in the 'Logical Network Problems' section I came to 'a corrupt LSP/Winsock
layer' hyperlink. It was there that it was suggested to reset the TCP/IP protocol.

I used the "netsh winsock reset catalog" call and reset. To my astonishment everything was right with the world. And
so I can only thank and thank again Chuck for having a web site that offers guidance and also for answering all those
questions! Chuck, who has the same last name as so many other people I have corresponded with - "MVP". Because I can't
pronounce it I am guessing a Slavic background? ;-)

And we have another case of LSP / Winsock corruption. Cured by the native
"netsh" command. I'm glad that my layered diagnostic technique helped you,
