OmniPage Lite 5.0 - Canon FB310

I have an old Canon FB310 scanner that works fine except that I can't
get the bundled OmniPage Lite 5.0 software to correctly scan my
documents. Specifically, OmniPage generates inverted scans, usually a
very bright white outline of the document on a dark black background.
The document area usually contains no discernible image, just
occasional dot noise, if you know what I mean. If I cut and paste a
scanned image into OmniPage from another application (eg the bundled
Ulead iPhoto Express), then the OCR works correctly. AFAICS, OmniPage
communicates directly with the scanner driver - it does not allow the
user to play with the scan parameters via Canon's driver GUI, only via
an "oplimit.ini" file, or a rudimentary "scanner settings" dialogue
box. I'm using Win98se. I used to have OCR issues in Win95, but these
were resolved, for the most part, after some tinkering. Needless to
say, I can't remember what I did. :-(

Does anyone have a solution? Failing that, can anyone recommend OCR
software that has an "OCR Aware" feature which adds an "acquire text"
facility to selected applications?

Run the OmniPage Scanner setup utility.

In the testing of the scanner interface there is an option to invert the
Black and White scans.
