Old Worm, New Problems

L

I have been told that my computer, newly connected to the internet, is
the victim of the Blaster worm. I am now someone else's computer w/
win98.

Long story short, now I cannot boot up my computer. I cannot get into
safe mode either. I tried to boot it up with boot disks now I get
"error loading operating system."

If I cannot even get in using safe mode, is there another way to get
my computer operating safely again?

I use windows XP Pro. I would prefer to not reformat the hard drive. I
was able to run a drive diagnostic test (which does not operate w/in
windows) and the drive is fine.

I have a 40G master drive and a 120G slave drive for video.
Life was hunky dory until I connected to the internet and downloaded
these security patches from microsoft. then the computer just kept
rebooting.

thanks for any help.

Whilst your computer is offline go to Start - Run and type
services.msc select RPC (Remote Procedure Call) from the
list, double click and select Recovery - change the top
option to Restart the Service. This should stop the
computer shutting down.
Make sure your firewall is enabled - very important - and
go online.
Logon to http;//www.kellys-korner-xp.cpm/xp_qr.htm#rpc
and follows the instructions.
Hope this helps.

Make certain that your computer is disconnected from the Internet.

Boot it with the Windows XP CDROM and then do a Repair Install as per
the instructions at http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

Good luck
