old dos games

Hey, I have some old dos/win95-based games that i want to
be able to play again, but windows XP won't allow me to
use them.. usually a dos shell pops up, but then just
stops working. i've tried changing the compatibility
modes for the programs and everything i can think of, but
to no avail. if anyone knows of a fix or something that
i may have missed, please tell me. I miss my C&C. :(

you need a program that slows down your processor. try
lockergnome.com or download.com and search.

Some DOS games try to directly access hardware. Mostly this happens
with the sound and video. That's a no, no in any NT class operating
system which XP is. The system will not allow any access to hardware
unless it uses proper calls through the HAL.

Setup a dual boot using the DOS from Win98 and play your games that
way or buy some nice new nifty 3D games that work in XP.

Or just do what I do and have an old Pentium 3 system set up with Windows 98
and all the old DOS games I own. A simple KVM switch lets me easily go
between my modern system and my old one.

If you want to play some older games, open up a dos shell
first, and then run the location of the exe file from that
particular shell.

Hope this helps,

There are some programs - largely games plus low-level utilities - that
try to handle the hardware for themselves, in the case of games often
bypassing video drivers to manipulate the hardware of the graphics card
fro themselves. Win98 and even ME continued to provide a loophole for
this, one reason for instability problems. XP will absolutely prohibit
them. Only way out is to have them on a small FAT 32 partition of hard
disk, and boot a DOS Startup floppy to run them

Best thing to do is install another hard drive, and put Windows98
on it, just for playing older games. Make the computer dual bootable.
