Old board..new RAM

Mattrixx

Just wondering why this old Super Socket 7 Jetway MB I`m fixing, wont
recognize all of the Kingston (Value RAM) PC133 256 MB memory stick I bought
new for $36!
It does "see" half of it or 128MB but NOT the whole 256MB.

I know this board is only a 100MHz, but PC133MHz should and is working OK,
just not *ALL* 256MB of it!

The Spec sheet say: "Support 3 Banks SDRAM Main Memory, 8Mbyte to
768MByte"
"Support 3 X 168-pins DIMM Module..
(SDRAM)"

The 768MByte means to me, I could have a 256 MB stick in each of it`s three
slots, for a total of 768MB....NO?

Thanks for any input into this relic.
Matt

P.S. Got this mid tower computer and 17inch monitor for nothing, and so far
have only put about $50 (heatsink/fan and RAM stick) into it. Thats my
limit!

Well my first thought is, does the motherboard support double sided ram. I
have heard that if there are chips on both sides of the stick then the MB
will only see one half. Is this the case for you? I tthink it might be.

Thanks for the quick response guys, but the one 32MB stick I took out of
this board has chips on both sides. The spec sheet says it supports 3
*banks*.... although, there are 3 slots!
Is there a way I can determine for sure whether or not this board will take
double sided RAM?

Thanks again
Matt

Most new 256MB 168-pin DIMMs are single-sided, with eight 32Mx8(256Mbit) chips.
Old motherboards like yours, will not support single-sided 256MB DIMMs. Your
board will require a double-sided 256MB DIMM, with sixteen 16Mx8(128Mbit)
chips.

Ok this is the concept I was talking about, I just had the rule around the
wrong way...

OK...Now I am confused! The 256MB stick of Kingston Value RAM I have
installed into this MB
*IS* a double-sided 256 DIMM, with eight (8) chips total, four (4) on each
side!
Read from one chips on the stick: 133x64c3/256

These are less common, but it is not supported by your board for the same
reason--it uses 256Mbit chips. This 256MB DIMM has eight 16Mx16(256Mbit)
chips. Your board is limited to chip densities up to 128Mbits. You need a

Best bet is Crucial.com. Enter your MB and they'll come up with RAM
guaranteed to work with it. Reasonably priced too.

According to kingston, KVR133X64C3/256 RAM is NOT backward compatible with
motherboards that only support Ram at 100Mhz.
What you will need is KVR100X64C3/256.

Thanks again guys, for all your input.
I have the KVR133X64C3/256 installed and working on this 100 Mhz. bus MB,
but it is only recognizing HALF of it or 128MB. I got it so cheap ($36 incl
tax) I`m just leaving it in as is.
I have also re-installed an original 64MB PC100 stick, and both are working
together satisfactorally at present, for a grand total of 192MB - 4MB
(onboard video) or 188MB.
