Offline files

Tim Brown

We are running Windows XP Professional and require the users to be able to
configure their own offline files. By default, as I understand, WXP
configures offline files automatically. However, the users cannot choose
which folders are synchronised or not as the Make available offline option
is greyed out which means that all folders under their F: drive get
synchronised whether they need them or not. I have had a look at Group
policy but can only see options to disable certain aspects of offline files.

Does anyone have a resolution to this and what is it?

Your help is appreciated.

Hi Tim,

As I have understand, you can make the folder offline instead the whole
drive. Please refer to the following article to configure the offline
folder:

307853 HOW TO: Use Offline Files in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=307853

If the "Make available offline" is grayed out, please refer to the
following articles:

252509 Error Message, it also applies to XP: Files of This Type Cannot Be
Made Available Offline http://support.microsoft.com/?id=252509

Office Documents Are Synchronized to an Offline Share Automatically

Also check the following article to turn off the "Do not automatically make
redirected folders available offline":

HTH!

Thanks for the information but I have been unable to find the Do not
automatically make redirected folders available offline option in group
policy. Any ideas?

The policy is located to:

User Configuration->Administrative Templates->Network -> Offline Files

Do not automatically make redirected folders available offline.

Please refer to
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;304624 for more
details. If you have further questions, please feel free to let me know
what where is the difficulty. :)

Sorry, I have looked there but I cannot find this policy. Do I need to load
XP SP2 to get this policy?

Hi

No. As long as the inf files on the domain controller is updated
with Windows XP or Windows 2003 Server inf files, you should be
able to see it.

Which .inf files would these be and where can I find them? How do I update
it/them?

Hi

First, I meant Group Policy administrative template (.adm) files
and not .inf files

If you have one domain controller that is Windows 2003 Server, or you
have used Windows XP to administer the Group Policy settings in the
domain, those files should automatically have been updated.

Group Policy Template Behavior in Windows Server 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316977

I would think most things in the link above applies to Win2k as well.

Recommendations for managing Group Policy administrative
template (.adm) files
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/816662

A discussion about it here:
http://groups-beta.google.com/group..._doneTitle=Back+to+Search&&d#130e4d93db7c9984

See here on how Jeff updated the Default Domain Policy templates when
they would not do it automatically:
http://groups-beta.google.com/group..._doneTitle=Back+to+Search&&d#fa468982fef80549

You can also download the latest .adm files from here:

http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=31057

If you install the WinXP SP2 .adm files on the domain controller, but
you don't use WinXP SP2 to edit the GPO settings, you may you get the
message below, install the hotfix that is available in the KB article
in the link below to solve this.

"The following entry in the [strings] section is too long and has
been truncated" error message when you try to modify or to view GPOs
in Windows Server 2003, Windows XP Professional, or Windows 2000
