Offline files?

My virus scanner,Avast, reports a large number of files as "File is
offline -- it is currently not available." Where are these files? Are
they compressed and hidden somewhere? How can I get them back to being
ordinary online files?

I don't know what Avast means by that.....I'd probably start by checking in
their help/documentation.
