offline file synchronization

Tom Pors

I use the offline file feature of W2K professional. I
just replaced a hard drive on my server where all the
files were kept, and want to synchronize all the new and
updated files since the crach from my laptop to the new
server harddrive. The file mapping is different now, and
my question is how to change the mapping in offline files
on my laptop so they can find the new location on my
server hard drive. Hope someone can help. Thanks

I created a mess with offline files the other day. First, we
synchronized the laptop to the server. Next, I told the laptop to no
longer make the network share available offline. Next, I unshared the
folder on the server, moved and rearranged the files, changed the
server's computer name, and then shared the new folders. The laptop
complained about not being able to find the old share on the old server
name. The work-around was to use the advanced (?) features of the
synchronization tool on the laptop and delete all the local copies of
the offline files, change the server name back, create an empty folder
and share it with the old name, tell the laptop to connect to the
replacement share and make the files available offline, go
offline/online, log in/out, and tell the laptop to no longer make the
files available offline. After enough permutations, the laptop no
longer was looking for the old share and offline files, and I could
rename the server and connect the laptop to the new shares.

Good luck,

David

Hi
You might want to take a look at the reskit tool csccmd. It has a parameter
/moveshare that allows you to change the offline-folder mapping.
Although I'm in favor of Microsofts stuff, this offline-folder thing has
cost me days and weeks of work. If you have to move user data around servers
as an ongoing task, offline files are a nightmare for users and admins. Sad
enough that Microsoft has removed some vital parameters from their last
csccmd release, such as the /enum parameter, which was a great thing in
order to scriptomatically get rid of offline-folder problems. If you need a
way to list out, what offline folder connections are on a machine you have
to search for the beta release of the tool.

Hope this helps
Andre
