This .CAB file on my Office XP CD has been called corrupted by the
installation program when I was trying to add MS Outlook to my system.
Anyone know where I can get a replacement for the .CAB file?

The file on yr cd is unlikely to be corrupted, for that you need read/write
access to the cd.
The cd may be damaged - different matter
or more probably there is a corrupt file on yr sys

That's really not an answer. In order for me to get help I need to
understand what to do about this problem. You have provided no
olution. --PJP

....and you have provided no courtesy. Not much of a stimulant, PJP.

You might, in any order you choose:
1. Borrow another CD & try again.
1a. Think about the results.
2. Try your CD on another machine.
2a. Think about the results.
3. Copy your CD to your HDD and try the install from there.
3a. Think about the results.
4. Based on results, decide whether to
(a) deal with Microsoft directly for a replacement CD, or
(b) search the web for an illicit copy of the file (or the CD), or
(c) get a new CD drive.

Above all, do what you can to think. DL's answer pretty well covered the
bases. This newsgroup doesn't do house calls, or generally react well to
the determinedly impolite or wilfully obtuse. Handholding happens, but
rarely in response to a followup post like yours. Nobody really knows
why for sure, it just seems like that's one of those mysteries of life.

Gentlemen:

While I personally feel I wasn't really impolite I can freely admit it might
seem so. I have been up and down with having had to try and re-install
Outlook 2002 since I had to uninstall it last fall. Every time something
stops the attempt. This was just the latest incident and it -- if you'll
forgive me -- gets me tense to see it fail again. I have tried to go the
route of copying the installation CD to my HDD, but the file,
"InstmsiW.exe" stops it every time. It says I have to "mount the volume"
as if the executable was its own HDD! Believe me, I know what I'm talking
about -- I used to be an IBM mainframe computer operator. This problem
does, however, mystify me.

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Paul J. Perillo

Another point when you post to many ng's its better to enter the addresses
of all in the 'to box' that way we can follow the thread in all.
There is a link to the MS kb article for the error code given in one of yr
other posts

PJP - dat ol debbil tension gets us all now & then...I hope one or
another of the various suggestions in the thread help you out of the
ferschlugginer nightmare.

I'll be over here in the corner, working on more empathetic responses.
Unfortunately for me, unlike NASA, failure is an option. But heck, each
dawn is a new IPL. :)
