Office docs slow to open in IE7

I don't see an IE7 discussion group, so I'll try this here.

We are experiencing a problem with opening Office files from inside IE7. The
PC is running both Office 2003 and 2007. All Word documents in 2003 format
take at least 45 seconds to open. It seems like the machine is pretty much
frozen during this time. You can move the mouse, but if you do something
like drag a window, it leaves streaks of window all over. Interestingly,
maybe, if you unplug the network cable during the hang-up the document seems
to open faster. I believe the file is actually downloaded in a few seconds,
but Office 07 is having trouble opening it or something. I can do a Save
Target As... and it saves immediately and lets me open it all in a few
seconds. It's only hanging if I simply click on the link. It opens
immediately in Firefox as well.

I have tried every combination of uninstalling, reinstalling both 2003 and
2007, and the only configuration that works is if 2003 is the only version
installed. I need to have 2007 on these machines.

I don't know if these troubles are related, but in addition to the Word
problem, Excel files in 2003 format give the warning: "The file you are
trying to open is in a different format than specified by the file
extension." Then it opens. It takes about 30 seconds for this error to
appear.

Access files in 2003 version won't open, giving this message: "The file does
not exist or you don't have read access".

PowerPoint 2003 works just fine.

To further confuse me, this only happens on our Dell Dimension 8400
computers. Our other computers, all Dell Precisions, do not experience this
problem. I have even rebuilt an 8400 from scratch and put on nothing but
Office 03 and 07 and it has this problem as soon as I install Office 2007.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated by many irritated professors.

Hi Ubiquitousspor,

I find Office 2007 apps extreemly slow to open. What happens when you click
on an email link? Outlook is slow to open too?

If this is an intranet application serving up word templates you may want to
consider sharing a template folder amongst your users instead of having
hyperlinks in a web document.
If these are read-only word documents you may consider converting them to
PDF format which can be opened in the browser window or a pdf reader.

Regards.
