OFFICE 97..ACCESS ODBC

Cannot install Offie 97 onto a desktop with Windows 98 (1st edition). During
setup, it stops and states that it cannot find the ODBC for Access. In the
control panel I find ODBC "stuff", but not the 32 bit driver (which I assume
I need). What to do? Am going to try and find the driver on the Net, but
basically I am miffed.
A little over my head I fear.

Did this computer once have a Corel application installed, which was
subsequently uninstalled? That would be one of the reasons why you'd see
this error.

What to do?

Install Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2.5 SP-3 (which contains the
Jet DLL's) and MDAC 2.8 SP-1. Please see the following Web page for

It certainly won't hurt to clean up the partial install and start over, as
Arvin suggests. That's what I'd do (or reinstall the system from backup,
whichever takes the least amount of time). When an installation is aborted,
it's a good idea to clean up any loose ends before starting over.

My experience with missing ODBC drivers is to install the latest version of
MDAC, which fixes it. However, the latest version of MDAC is missing the
Jet components and a few other things, which MDAC 2.5 SP-3 contains.
Therefore, MDAC 2.5 should be installed before MDAC 2.8. In my experience,
Office 97 installs on this configuration and runs without further problems
after all the updates are installed.

If I were in your shoes, I'd do the cleanup first, then install both MDAC's,
then install Office 97 from CD, then install Office 97 SR-2 and other
updates, particularly Jet 3.51, which isn't included in MDAC, but it's
required for Access 97. However, skipping the MDAC installs would take less
time and avoid possible incompatibilities with the earlier DLL's that Arvin
mentioned.

Well, I listened to both of you and it worked. First, I ran Regclean, then
ran mdac _ typ.exe which installed the driver I was missing. Then the install
of Office 97 went as usual.
