An OEM copy of Vista cannot do an upgrade. You can upgrade RC1 from a full
retail version of ultimate. You cannot use an upgrade version because RC1
is not a qualifying product.

If you use the OEM version use Windows Easy Transfer (WET) to transfer data
and settings to a USB drive or CD/DVD, then install Vista, reinstall apps,
and use WET to bring back the data and settings.

You may not be able to do an upgrade. You can use the upgrade option in a
retail full edition, but historically OEM editions have not had an upgrade
functionality. OEM editions are set up to install the OS only on a drive
without an OS. Check with the vendor.

from memory, I believe RC1 to RTM is a valid upgrade route but as in most
cases it is far better to start with a fresh clean install!

Not with either an OEM version or an upgrade version. To upgrade RC1 to RTM
you need the full version of Vista. That will do an upgrade, but RC1 is not
a quailfying product for the use of the upgrade edition. And OEM software
cannot do an upgrade, only a custom install.

Interesting -- glad my two RC1 test beds are just that. Sounds like
when the time comes, I simply regroove them and set them up from
scratch.
