You will be able to update to sp2, and the rest of the updates from
there. No biggie.

Just install with your cd,then update to SP2. Windows Update will offer you
SP2, but I would download the installer and burn it to cd so you can install
SP2 before reconnecting to the internet.

So.. do it.

nLite and AutoStreamer will almost do it for you if you have an actual
Windows XP installation CD.

There are instructions all over the web on how to do that and more. You
could have your Windows XP installation CD have Windows XP with SP2 and all
patches after that integrated, all the plugins you like to use could be
installed from it, etc.. There is no limit to how much you can really
customize the Windows Xp installation CD (or even DVD) to your liking.

A good place to start - in case you don't just want to read through and find
this link below (along with the others for produucts/methods already
mentioned):

http://unattended.msfn.org/

You can download and save all updates for later use - including service
packs. You can even integrate those patches into your Windows XP
installation CD - so if you had to reinstall - you wold end up almost
fully-patched right fromthe beginning.

For service pack 2 in particlular:

Direct Download of Service Pack 2 (SP2) for Windows XP
http://snipurl.com/8bqy

Order Windows XP Service Pack 2 on CD
http://snipurl.com/d41v

You can download each update manually - based off the KB Article number,
etc. That way you can back it up/burn a CD of them in case you need them or
use them to keep a slipstream/integrated (updated) Windows XP CD.

You can see the critical (security and other) patches released for a given
month using the following:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms##-***.mspx

At the end of this line you see "ms##-***.mspx" .. If you simply replace ##
with the two-digit year and the *** with the three character month
abbreviation, you will see the list of "critical" and "important" patches
for that month (since it only happens once a month usually, if you check by
the second Tuesday (wait until afternoon) of each month - you should be
fine) - note that future months will not work.

As an example...

December 2004's patches..
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms04-dec.mspx

March 2005's patches..
None released.. so that one will fail...

May 2005's patches..
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms05-may.mspx

July 2005's patches..
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms05-jul.mspx

Once you get on the page with each month's list of patches.. You can go to
the related KB articles and grab the appropriate files from there.

Unattended installation or cloning methods:

By CD/DVD...

By network...

Your other choice might be to create a universal image - but I think you
would get more flexibility with an unattended installation.

Slipstream the i386 folder with SP2 then burn a new CDROM.

You don't need to install SP1 before SP2. SP2 includes everything. There
are a lot of updates since SP2, though.

However, Steven posted with SP2 and all but one of the later updates.

I'm sorry I was not clearer in my post.

I was replying to the original post statement "...with an oem copy of Windows xp pre sp1
....".

So when I replied "You install WinXP pre SP1 Home Edition and then install SP2." I did not
mean to imply the installation of SP1. The orginal WinXP HE (Gold edition ?) can be
installedf and the the administrative EXE version can be executed.

As always I suggest copying the i386 folder from the installation CDROM to the root of the
"C:" drive and making sure the Registry points to this location via the following setting...

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup

and change...

"SourcePath" from D:\ (or other location) to; c:\

Then slip-stream the c:\i386 folder to SP2 level.

Assuming the Administrative SP2 EXE was named WinXP-SP2.exe you would use the following
command line to slip-stream the c:\i386 folder...

WinXP-SP2.exe -u -s:c:\

You have two choices, either of which will work. In the first instance
reinstall with the CD you have then install SP2, then the post SP2 updates.

The second option is to create an installation CD slipstreamed with SP2
- in essence creating your own XP +SP2 installation CD.

Guys, Steve want to know how to have an windows disk , He has a
preinstall oem version , So what are all the steps he needs to burn his
oem copy of windows xp sp1 , Isn't it more then just using i386 folder
from the oem version and sp2 , then what slipstream it together ?

Richard Urban

Reinstall from your CD. Immediately upgrade to SP1 (SP2 is highly
recommended). Then continue on with your updates from there. It is only the
"original" pre-SP1 CD that are not supported. You need SP1 or higher to
continue support and updates.

if it is really true that the
"original" pre-SP1 CD are not supported, then i guess i'm screwed for that
then for that.
i don't really wanna make a slipstream CD or whatever it is called like a
few people segested.
besides the CD-rw drive in it has issues,m so i don't even know if it can
burn a CD properly.
well it should since i added a dvd burner to it.

It's easy to do, well worth it - or you can do one of two other things (not
counting asking someone good with computers to do the slipstream for you.)

1) Just order the CD for SP2 and if you ever have to Reinstall Windows XP -
stay disconnected from the internet until you make sure your firewall is
enabled and then run that CD on your fresh install.. That way you have SP2.

2) Spend the money and buy (although this seems ridiculous) a new Windows CD
with SP2 integrated.

Just getting AutoStreamer and making a new CD seems like the way to go!

Very likely that CD is specialized (possibly "BIOS Locked" for that
particular machine.
It *may* be generic enough to work - just use the CD Key on your other
computer - not the one from the EVO when using it.

The CD key is not 'stuck' to the CD in any way - just to the TYPE of CD and
each machine should - in non-volume licenses - have their own keys to use.
Try using the non-EVO CD Key from your other machine with the EVO CD on that
machine.

However - good chance that won't work either and you would still be better
off using AutoStreamer or NLite.

ilost the evo CD though. i tried using its key with the new xp sp2 cd but it
did not work.
i think the evo key is for a pre sp1 installation CD as well but it is not a
oem license.
the evo is even older then the 4403us by more then a year.
do you have any ideas?
