Some time ago I changed the location of my OE store folder from my C drive
to my D drive. I remenber this used to work for import/export. Today I
apparently can no longer use this folder. Can this folder get corrupt?

Hi Andre,

Sure it can. What I've done in the past is create a new mail store, then try
importing the messages from the old one.

Thanks Rick, but how do I make a new store folder? And will the old store
folder becomme accessible then?.Actually, when I try to import from my
existing OE store folder I get this message : *The specified message store
could not be opened. It may be in use by Outlook Express*. And my confusion
is that , because I can only import messages when OE is openend, this folder
is then of course used by Outlook Express>

File/Identities/Add new identity. Then import your old messages into
what will be a new message store for the new identity.

Yes!

General OE Caveats:

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [N/A in SP2] and frequently perform a manual
compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm

- WinXP SP2 only: Do not attempt to close OE via Task Manager or shutdown
your machine if Automatic Compacting is taking place.

- WinXP SP2 only: If your machine is fully up-to-date at Windows Update,
installing the following patch (KB918766) will help to avoid such data loss
in the future:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=86b68a78-f325-4a95-98c2-98af2256ccc3

This patch will be included in the next Cumulative Update for Outlook
Express/WinXP SP2.

- Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause
corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.

Tools > Options > Maintenance > Store folder will reveal the location of
your current Identity's store
(http://www.insideoe.com/files/store.htm#storemain). Write it down.

In WinXP, Win2K and Win2K03, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default
marked as hidden. To view these files in Explorer, you must enable Show
Hidden Files and Folders under Start > Control Panel > Folder Options >
View.
