OE address book

My address book seems to have gone very strange. All entries beginning with
A, B or C have disappeared. The address book now only starts with names
beginning with D.

Also, I don't know if this is part of the same problem or not but a strange
icon has appeared on my desktop. The filename is just "~" (without the
quotes) and opening it with Notepad shows some strange characters mingled
with parts of names and email addresses from my address book.

Anyone know what's going on and how I can fix it?

I should have said that I'm running XP Pro, SP1, and all updates/patches.

I have no idea about your missing a, b & c.

The tilde bug has been around for about a year now.
