Odd non-Admin behaviour since reinstall

P

Paddy

Recently had a hard disk crash. Installed new HDD, reinstalled XP Prof and
all software and restored backed up files etc etc etc. All fine.

However, an oddity has arisen. Some non-MS programs (eg Paint Shop Pro 5)
won't run properly as non-Admin User. Favourite CD burning software runs,
but does
not recognise CD burner drive as non-Admin User.

Is there a setting I've missed somewhere?

Meanwhile, I've changed my User to Administrator rights

TIA

First they tell us to run as a limited user. Then they make it so hard...
(Vista will/does deal with this a bit better by using least needed rights
managing instead. So, let's hope it improves because it's awfully hard for
me to advocate using a limited account when it's still this buggy.)

Anyhow, what happens if you click on the shortcut and then load it with the
"run as..." option and entering in the criteria for an account with
administrative rights? If it works and there's no problems with it then
that's simply the issue and there's not really a whole lot that you can do
about it other than, of course, running as the admin which I'm loathe to
recommend unless it's dire circumstances.

Yes - I should have mentioned that "Run as" works fine. Also I should have
mentioned that the original installation worked fine. (Tried to keep
original query to minimum)

"Run as" is a PITA, so I've given the User (self & wife) Admin rights. But
of course that's nuts. That's why I wonder if there's a setting I missed or
ticked or left unticked.

Install for all users? Maybe? When you did the installation did you have and
check that option? Sometimes you have to do the installation with it's
custom configuration unfortunately but that's often the solution. Sometimes
you even have to break down and install it (with poorly coded installers) on
multiple accounts.
