Odd Boot Behavior

My XP Pro (SP2) with updates has been behaving normally until yesterday
when it started to show the desktop with icons then switched by itself
to C:\Program Files\Dell, which contains drivers, printer software,
shared DLL's, etc. If I close this file, my computer returns to the
desktop with icons and everything behaves normally. I am totally at a
loss to explain or correct this problem.

Can anyone explain what is going on here and how I might be able to stop
this strange behavior?

sounds like a bad entry in the startup processing.
run MSCONFIG and take a good long look at all then entries in the Startup tab.
