What are recommended as the best programs for scanning and OCR currently
available for Windows XP?
(My apologies if this is an all too common question in this newsgroup).

There are two leaders.
I use Omnipage Pro 15. Many prefer Abbyy Fine Reader

Omnipage Pro 15 (If you have any OCR program, you can upgrade for less
money)

If you need a full featured program then Abbyy Fine Reader is as good
as it comes but Abby 'Scanto Office' does everything I need

I agree, Abbyy Fine Reader is a good program. I had too many problems with
the OP manager of Omnipage Pro, so I tried out Fine Reader and have never
looked back.

Thanks for the suggestions. Scan-to-Office could be interesting but only if
its output can be read (or indeed can be written ) in other formats than
Microsoft Word since I use Open Office and other Open Source software. I
will give it a try though.
