Obstinate desktop icon..

So, i have this icon on my desktop that I cannot remove. The right click
context menu has no delete option in it - highlighting the icon and pressing
the delete key does absolutley nothing - dragging it to the trashcan also
doesn't work... although it does put a small round circle on it with a line
through it.

What else can I try?

Is it a shortcut icon, or is it possibly an actual program file. Look at the
icon's properties to determine such. If it is a program file, and that
program is in use, you will not be able to delete the icon until after the
program has been terminated.

right click - properties just produces an explorer.exe error box that says
"application not found"...
I've checked Task Manager, and I can't see any relevant entries - the icon
appears to be part of a Citrix VPN connection that I have removed
previously.

Thanks for the reply though! Any other ideas?

Try looking in

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Desktop\NameSpace

Expand Namespace, and you will see a list of keys (with names using lots of
numbers). Select each one, one at a time, and look at the Data for each one
in the right-hand pane. See if you can find a key with any reference to
Citrix VPN. If so, export the entire Namespace key as a backup, and then
delete (by right-clicking on it) the "lots of numbers" subkey (only)
referencing Citrix VPN.

In Greek: RMB desktop: Properties, Desktop,
Customize desktop..., Clean desktop now,
(Whiz ... next, etc. Finish.) Delete the
folder named Unused desktop shortcuts.
Rejoice.
