I have a Dell Dimension 8200 with XP, SP3 , Windows Firewall, Avast antivirus, Spywareblaster, and run Firefox for the Internet.I’ve upgraded the HD and the RAM and swapped a DVD player for the old 3 ½ inch disc player. All the programs work well together and are up to date.
I’ve recently upgraded to a Dell XPS 8500, with Windows 7, which also has McAfee installed and I would like to remove it and install Avast instead. I know removing some programs is more than just removing them from the Add/Remove list. So can anyone please give me instructions or tips as to how to go about removing McAfee?
Thank you,
Robert
The information is available, in a search engine.
As soon as I start typing "Mcafee", suggested search results include
"Mcafee removal tool". And a link like this shows up. The formatting
of the article, is delightfully confusing. You'll have to carefully
pick your way through the text.
http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS101331
Basically, it includes steps involving Control Panels : Programs and features
(which is like Add/Remove for WinXP). After you've removed the program
the regular way, they have a separate tool. You right click this
download, and select "Run as Administrator" from the right-click
context menu.
"McAfee Consumer Product Removal"
http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe
The tool includes a captcha step, where you're presented a diagram,
and you type in the text you see. This is to authorize the removal
(so a bot couldn't do it, say).
Part of the instructions, are there so you won't lose your McAfee
subscription, such as it is. For a user such as yourself,
that includes "activate your McAfee subscription before
you uninstall them".

As a Windows 7 user, you can also post in alt.windows7.general , which
is one of the groups for Windows 7. Since Google groups does not
host alt.windows7.general, you will have to avail yourself of a
real news server, such as eternal-september or AIOE.
Have fun,
