O-2007B2 Category import and color assignment

All,
A search on "category" didn't turn up an answer...

I imported approx 900 contacts which were distributed across about 15
categories. Now B2 has the color categories listed but no access to my
imported set . When I edit a contact or add a new one there is no access to
these categories when I click "Categories" in the ribbom bar. From the very
limited documentation on categories (I know, it's a beta!) I think I could
"re-assign" a color to a categopry but there aren'rt enough colors to cover
my existing categories.

The one-click option for Category in the Table format doesn't offer any more
options than the six colors.

My categories DID import. They show up in the table format if I customize
the view to have this field show. I can sort on them.

What gives?

MS accidentally removed the button in B2 that constructs a color
category list from all categories assigned to items...
You can assign the same color to multiple categories. Basically the
color categories are the same as categories in 2003, with the exception
that they have a color assigned to them.

I just wrote a careful follow up to your message, Patrick and got a message
that the server was busy -- and that wiped out all the work to get my
question framed correctly. This has happened twice now in a couple of days.
Really frustrating, as cut and paste has never worked to allow writing
outside this pop-up. Sorry, I just had to vent!
I give up for tonight. It's very late here.

re: Outlook2007
So,then, two issues:
1. Re-assign, or "attach-for-the-first-time", all my [imported] categories
to have a color
2. Make sure I have 15-20 possible colors, because color is how you aassign
a category

How will I get the colors assigned to the existing contacts as a batch
operation? I want to be able to used the benefits of display but I will need
to come up with more colors so I have unique colors. There must be a wayt to
have 15-20 categories in a program as powerful as Outlook.

Given that the categories ended up in the ribbon I like the idea of hot keys
for *ongoing* data entry and edits but the batch assignment of colors to my
existing categories SEEMS to be the only way I can get access to them through
the ribbon button.

Lastly, will MS put the function back (by release) thay they left out in
error?

Sue, Patrick, others, what do you think?

Outlook 2007 supports 25 colors. More than one category can share a color. Up to 11 categories can have a shortcut key combination.

As Patrick explained, there is a known problem in Beta 2 with migrating existing categories that should be fixed by the time Outlook 2007 is released.

You might try using the By Category view to see what categories you already have in use and then bring up the Categories dialog to give them colors.
