NVRAM Problem

M

I am running an ASUS P4P800S-X Motherboard with a P4 3.0GHz CPU, 1GB
of DDR Ram consisting of two 512 chips, and an ASUS Radeon 9550SE VGA
card.

Recently I started having problems on boot-up where during the boot
sequence the computer would freeze when it reached the NVRAM check.

The screen will say

DDR Frequency 400 Mhz
Checking NVRAM..

And then it stops booting up.

If I turn off the power and reboot it then gets past that part on the
second boot and shows the following instead:

[color=blue:b959983681]Overclocking Failed! Please enter Setup to
re-configure your system.[/color:b959983681]

If I then press F1 to enter the Bios Setup menu and exit without
changing anything the computer boots up fine.

This problem now happens every time I boot my PC from having been
powered off.

At first I thought maybe the Ram chips were loose so I took them out
and swapped the slots. That didn’t help.

Now I am thinking it may be a BIOS setting, but I am not sure what I
would need to reset in the BIOS to fix the problem.

Any ideas would be kindly appreciated.

Sounds as tho` the BIOS settings are incorrect if you`ve got DDR400, Ithink
it will only run at 200Mhz, or try running default settings in BIOS.
You can always `tweak` once everything is stable..J

Thanks for the idea on resetting BIOS to default and then resetting
things one by one once it is stable. May do the trick.

Also, not sure what my RAM is. I think made by RAMBO, but that is all
I know. But RAM has been installed and working fine for a while so
don't think all of a sudden a RAM incompability would occur after
using it a while, you think?

Nvram is part of the BIOS.It's the None Volatile(NV) part and nothing
to do with the system ram.
HTH :)

Yeah, but it looks like something in nvram hangs right after it shows the
"DDR frequency 400"

Download and run CPU-Z, it will display the SPD info on your memory. If
not overclocking, BIOS should be set to configure memory by SPD or AUTO.

"Looks Like" is the point, most likely not the cause.
Pull power cord out or in the UK switch off at the wall.Find and
use,"Clear CMOS jumper" on the mother board.

ATX powered systems cannot clear a corrupted BIOS/CMOS with power to
the board. If the system has a Power supply isolator switch,as mine has
does at the back of my tower case, that can be used.

This will clear and reset the Bios to it's,"Failsafe"defaults. The
system should then be useable and the correct parameters and O/S
adjustments made.
