nVidia drivers, which ones?

can anybody explain to me which nVidia drivers need to be installed to make your system run properly (see my earlier post). on the nvidia drivers site the main categories are 'graphics driver' and 'platform/nforce driver'. i download the XP version for each. with all previous display drivers uninstalled from my system I try the nforce install. It just extracts files to c:\nvidia and then installshield prepares for setup and quits leaving me back on the desktop. if i just install the graphics driver it installs but i have the same old problem of crashing games and screen freezes! What the hell is up with my system!? Why does it hate me so!?

You install the graphics drivers only if you are using a nVidia based video
card (TNT, GeForce)

You install the platform drivers ONLY if you motherboard is using a nVidia
nForce chipset.

You may need to install both drivers if you have both a nVidia nForce
chipset based motherboard and a nVidia based video card. Order in which to
install these: nForce chipset first then video drivers after.

If you do not have a nVidia nForce chipset based motherboard, then you need
to install the correct chipset drivers. Your motherboard manual should be
able to tell you which ones you need.

use only whql drivers, at this time the 5.3.03 nvidia driver is the only one certified. there is a new driver out, a beta that is 5.3.06 that is not whql certified. go to guru3d.com and see the downloads page and navigate from there
u did not tell us your card type. going forward that will help. we in gaming land refer to the driver as the fifty three o three driver that came out dec.9? anyway, it is the latest certified driver out there for nvidia. this is the driver for your video card
