1) what's the simplest way to setup a small ad hoc hard-wired network?
use a hub switch and setup a workgroup?

2) what if microsoft networking is blocked or disabled (workgroups are
not visible) and i can't ping to any of the connected machines?

1. yes, probably
2. if, indeed, "networking is blocked or disabled" and you "can't ping to
any of the connected machines" then you won't be networking any time soon

Sounds like you've already done the work. And you got something wrong
and you don't know what to look for to correct the problem. And on
top of that you won't give us the straight forward question to fix your
problem.

Still, here is how I would respond to your questions.
1) Connect all PC's to a hub, switch, or router. Assign all PC's to the
same workgroup name. As simple as "HOME" will work. Also make sure
you have a router or your ISP assigns IP addresses to your PCs, normally
a Router has DHCP and does this. Turn off the Firewall for a minute.
Make a "C:\share" folder on each PC, and share it so the others can
see it.

Bingo you should be able to see in 'my networks' the other PCs and each
should have a share folder.

This is 'simple'. Nothing fancy. Once it works, turn on your
firewall if you have one and see if things change. I have zone alarm
and have to add a setting to allow traffic between PC's.

2) If all is set right you should not have this issue. I've set and
reset my 3 PC home network and 14 PC office so many times. Never had a
"blocked" PC unless I oops'd and didn't set it right.

Can you see yourself on the network?

each PC can ping to itself, but doesn't show up in the workgroup.
i believe that the IT group i am working with has blocked networking
with their firewall software. even tho they knew this network would
not connect their main network.

Well now you tell us that you have an IT department and your are not
doing this on your own, like at home.
Yes a more complex system can cause problems. Talk to the IT people.
They run the business, let them earn their salary.

this is a project i am working on that involves an MS Access data
entry app that i developed. the ad hoc network will live at a
client's site. we bought the PCs, but they rules dictate that certain
security software be installed and that their IT dept handle it.
i tested this setup at our location and had no problems. this is the
way my home network is setup (more or lesss).
can i use IPX/SPX if they still have it f'ed up when i return for
another pre-production visit?

Why ask here? Your questions really don't relate to XP.

Ask elsewhere
